Delaware 69, Virginia Commonwealth 45 January 9, 2003 Hot Shooting Blue Hens Cruise to Seventh Straight Win RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware stormed out to a 20-point halftime lead and used some hot shooting to cruise to a 69-45 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over host Virginia Commonwealth Thursday night at the ALLTEL Pavilion. Point guard Carrie Timmins scored a career-high 10 points for the Hens The Blue Hens (7-3, 2-0 CAA) extended their winning streak to seven games as sophomore forward Tiara Malcom recorded a career-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds, senior guard Allison Trapp netted 20 points, Julie Sailer scored all of her 13 points in the second half, point guard Carrie Timmins contributed a career-high 10 points and added four assists, and center Christine Cole pulled down eight rebounds. Trapp, coming off a career-high 34 point effort in Sunday's 80-69 win over CAA foe Hofstra, had a streak of 12 straight field goals made snapped in the first half but posted her fifth 20-point effort in the last seven games. Malcom, who scored 16 points in the first half and finished the night hitting on 8 of 13 shots from the field, posted her ninth straight double figure scoring effort and surpassed her previous career high of 18 points set twice earlier this season. Virginia Commonwealth (3-8, 0-2 CAA), which handed Delaware one of only two road losses in CAA play a year ago, lost for the third time in the last four outings as the Rams shot a season low 27.7 percent (18 of 65) from the field. Forward Maria Giovannetti (nine rebounds, five rebounds) and guard Cyndy Wilks each scored 15 points for the Rams but top player Kristine Austgulen, a first team All-CAA forward, was held to just nine points and seven rebounds. Wilks hit on five three pointers but was only 5 of 20 from the field overall. "Our kids are really starting to understand what we need to do to win as a team," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, who has led her team to a league record of 17-3 in two seasons in the CAA. "Tonight we did a good job against the press, kept our composure, and when we broke the press we did a good job getting into our offense. We had good ball movement and really took away VCU's strength inside." Delaware shot a sizzling 51.8 percent from the field for the game, hitting on 29 of 56 shots for the team's best team shooting mark since converting on 55.4 percent (31 of 56) in a win over Towson Feb. 19, 2000. The Hens hit on 15 of 28 shots in the opening 20 minutes. The Blue Hens, led by Malcom's 16 first half points, pulled away midway through the first half and took a 38-18 advantage at intermission thanks to 15 of 28 shooting from the field while limiting VCU to just four field goals over the final nine minutes. Delaware used a 14-3 run to break open a close game and take a 20-9 lead with 11:01 left in the first half and scored the final nine points of the stanza for the comfortable lead. The two teams traded baskets for the first four minutes of the second half before the Hens used a 9-0 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 29 points at 56-27 with 10:42 remaining. Delaware held VCU to just one free throw attempt the entire game and that occurred when Austgulen completed a three-point play 35 seconds into the game. The one attempt was the lowest allowed by the Hens since Vermont connected on its only free throw attempt in a 62-49 Delaware win Jan. 28, 1994.
