Delaware 70, William & Mary 55 January 26, 2003 Hens Keep Up Winning Ways with Balanced Effort Tracey Howell (50) matched a career-high with 12 points and added eight rebounds off the bench NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward Julie Sailer led a balanced effort with 13 points and Allison Trapp, Carrie Timmins, and Tracey Howell each contributed 12 points as the University of Delaware led from start to finish in posting a 70-55 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over William & Mary Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware (11-4, 6-1 CAA) won its fourth straight game and its 11th in the last 12 outings in a game played before a season-high crowd of 1,721. William & Mary (5-11, 1-6 CAA) was hurt by 21 turnovers and struggled from the field and from the foul line in losing for the sixth time in its last seven outings. Delaware has now defeated the Tribe in all five meetings. William & Mary, which connected on just 21 of 59 shots from the field (35.6 percent), 10 of 20 shots from the foul line, and just 3 of 22 three-pointers, did not have a starter score in double figures. Forward Dominique Lewis came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points and pull seven rebounds while point guard Jen Sobota dished out six assists. Forward Lindsey Brizendine, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, was saddled with foul trouble most of the game and finished with just nine points and no rebounds. Sailer scored nine of her 11 points in the first half as the Blue Hens, taking advantage of William & Mary's 6 of 24 shooting from the field jumped out to a 33-17 halftime lead and never looked back. Trapp added six rebounds and four assists for the game, Timmins chipped in with five rebounds and three assists, and Howell came off the bench to match her career-high in scoring and also pulled a team-high eight rebounds. Also for the Hens, Christine Cole added eight points and seven rebounds and Tiara Malcom chipped in with seven points. Delaware overcame 23 turnovers by shooting 43.1 percent from the field (22 of 51), 80 percent from the foul line (24 of 30), and outrebounding the Tribe by a 41-34 margin for the game. The Hens broke open a close game by closing the first half on a 15-5 run to take a 33-17 lead into intermission. Delaware extended the lead to as much as 19 points several times in the second half, the last at 61-42 on a free throw by Malcom with 4:24 remaining. William & Mary made a late run, using some strong offensive rebounding and outscoring the Hens 11-1 over a span of three minutes to pull to within nine points at 64-55 with 1:03 left to play. The Hens went almost four minutes at one stretch without a field goal. However, the Tribe never got closer as Delaware connected on four free throws in the final 44 seconds of play to create some breathing room.
