Delaware 62, William & Mary 60 (OT) February 16, 2003 Malcom's Overtime Free Throws Lift Blue Hens   Tiara Malcom hit two free throws with three seconds left in overtime to send the Hens to the victory WILLIAMSBURG, VA- Sophomore Tiara Malcom sank two free throws with 3.1 seconds left in overtime to send the University of Delaware to a 62-60 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over upset-minded William & Mary Sunday afternoon at William & Mary Hall. The Blue Hens, who won their fourth straight, remained atop the CAA standings as they improved to 16-6, 11-2 CAA behind a team-high 19 points from Allison Trapp. Julie Sailer added 14 points and Malcom finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. The Hens are now 6-0 all-time vs. the Tribe. William & Mary (7-15, 3-10 CAA), which entered the game in ninth place in the 10-team CAA standings, got an outstanding effort from guard Jen Sobota, who sank six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points. Sobota hit a three-pointer late in overtime to tie the score and almost won the game for the Tribe when her desperation shot from just inside midcourt bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Christin Gethers added eight points for William & Mary while Lindsey Brizendine, who missed a potential game-winning free throw with 11 seconds left in overtime, had six points and a game-high eight rebouinds. "I knew this would be a tight one," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team was coming off an emotional 58-50 win over perennial CAA champion Old Dominion Thursday night. "William & Mary is tough to guard and their post players played well. I was frustrated with our lack of execution and when we finally took the lead, we forced some things. We wanted to get a high percentage shot at the end and Tiara got it done. She showed great composure by stepping up and knocking down the two free throws to give us the win." William & Mary rallied from a 53-46 deficit with 3:49 left in regulation to send the game into the extra session. Brizendine hit a jumper and Sobota followed with a three-pointer with 2:17 left to cut the lead to 53-51 and Lizzie Schiel converted a layup with 31 seconds left to knot the score at 53-53. Neither team scored again in regulation as Delaware's Carrie Timmins missed on a three-pointer with 56 seconds left and William & Mary's Jami Lange missed two shots in the final 28 seconds, including a foul line jumper with two seconds remaining. Delaware came out quickly in overtime and built a five-point lead as Sailer nailed a three-pointer and converted two free throws and Trapp hit a jumper for a 60-55 lead with 2:03 left. But the Tribe came right back as Lange hit a jumper and Sobota buried another three to tie the game at 60-60 with 40 seconds left. Sailer fouled Brizendine going for a loose ball with 11 second remaining, giving William & Mary the chance to go ahead. But Brizendine missed on the one and one and Christine Cole (seven rebounds) rebounded, giving the Hens a final chance. Malcom drove inside and got a shot off that rolled around the rim and just fell out but was fouled by Colleen McCaffrey. But Malcom, one of the CAA's top free throw shooters at 84.2 percent, calmly sank both shots to clinch the win.
