Delaware 67, Hofstra 41 February 15, 2004 Blue Hens Snap Out of Doldrums in a Big Way Behind Malcom Complete Game Statistics HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware women's basketball team broke out of a slump in a big way Sunday afternoon as Tiara Malcom (at right) exploded for 25 points and 10 rebounds and the Blue Hens held host Hofstra to just 17 second-half points on the way to an easy 67-41 Colonial Athletic Association victory at Hofstra Arena. Malcom hit on 8 of 16 shots from the field and drained 9 of 10 free throws to post her fifth double-double of the season, notch her 11th straight double figure scoring effort, and post her fifth 20-point scoring performance of the season as the Blue Hens (14-8, 6-7 CAA) snapped a four-game losing streak and downed the Pride for the ninth straight time over five seasons. Sophomore Amanda Blackstone, who earned her first career start in place of injured junior Julie Sailer (foot injury), stepped up with a career-high 14 points while freshman Alena Koshansky added 11 points, freshman guard Tyresa Smith contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Tiffany Young came off the bench to add eight points and nine boards for the winners. Hofstra, which entered the game in sole possession of second place in the CAA standings, struggled all afternoon and dropped its second straight game to fall to 12-10 (9-4 CAA). The Pride committed 32 turnovers, shot just 12 of 44 from the field (.273) for the game, and was held to just 17 second half points as they managed just five field goals in 22 attempts in the second stanza. No Pride players scored more than eight points and the five Hofstra starters combined for just 20 points. Shalamar Oakley came off the bench to score eight points while reserve Vanessa Gidden contributed seven points and six rebounds. Each of the four conference losses by the Pride this season have been by 26 points or more, including a 78-47 setback to Delaware back on Jan. 15 when Malcom scored a game-high 18 points. Hofstra was coming off a 105-62 setback to league-leading Old Dominion Thursday night. Except for two ties in the first five minutes of the game, the Blue Hens led from start to finish. After Cigi McCollin connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 8-8, Delaware followed with an 8-0 run, as Malcom and Young each scored two baskets, and never trailed again. The Hens led by as much as 10 points in the first half before settling for a 33-24 advantage at the break. The Hens left little doubt of the outcome in the second half, outscoring the Pride 10-4 in the opening four minutes to up the lead to 43-28 with 15:48 remaining. Delaware held Hofstra to just three points over the final six minutes of the game and scoreless for the final four minutes and 20 seconds as they built the lead to over 20 points. Delaware will return to action Feb. 20 when the Blue Hens travel to Old Dominion for a 7 p.m. game.
