scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the final four
minutes and 20 seconds as short-handed University of
Delaware rallied from seven points down late in the second
half for a key 66-59 Colonial Athletic Association women's
basketball win over UNC Wilmington Sunday at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Delaware, which won for the second time
in its last three games, trailed 50-43 with 5:29 left to
play before Malcom keyed a 15-1 run that put the Blue Hens
(15-9, 7-8 CAA) over the top. The Hens converted 14 of 16
free throws in the final 4:20 and hit on six of seven in the
final 47 seconds to put the game away.
Malcom, who also pulled nine rebounds and
dished out a team-high five assists, reached double figures
in scoring for the 13th straight game and surpassed the
20-point mark for the sixth time this season. She hit on 7
of 13 shots from the field and was 12 of 14 from the foul
line, connecting on eight free throws in the final minutes
of the game.
Alena Koshansky added 13 points
and two big three-pointers, Tyresa Smith had 11
points and five steals, and Tiffany Young pulled nine
rebounds off the bench to lead the effort.
"It was a big win for us," said Malcom, a
product of nearby Caravel Academy. "We knew we had to come
in and have a total team performance. I know we didn't play
many people but everyone who played came in the game and did
their best."
UNC Wilmington (12-12, 7-8 CAA) lost its
fourth straight game despite 17 points, but just four in the
second half, from CAA pre-season player of the year Cherie
Lea. Guard Jennifer Kapper added 11 points and four assists
and Tanika Harrison added 10 points. The Seahawks turned the
ball over 21 times and committed 25 fouls as Lea and Kapper
were forced to sit midway through the second half with four
fouls each.
"This was an unbelievable win and a gutsy
performance by our kids," said Delaware head coach Tina
Martin, who used just seven players as starting guards
Julie Sailer (foot) and Liz Hayes (concussion) both sat out
with injuries. "It has to be our best win of the year
considering we are playing without two of our main players.
I think our players showed great character today and kept
battling through the game. I'm very proud of their
effort."
UNC Wilmington took a 29-26 lead at
halftime and stayed in front the entire second half, going
up by as much as eight points at 41-33 with 13:43 left to
play. The Seahawks still led by seven points when Kapper hit
a running layup with 5:29 left to up the score to
50-43.
But the Hens took off from there,
outscoring UNCW 15-1 over the next three minutes and 45
seconds to turn the seven-point deficit into a seven-point
lead at 58-51. Smith opened the run with two baskets, Malcom
followed with six straight free throws, Koshansky nailed a
three-pointer, and Malcom capped the run with a layup. UNC
Wilmington went four minutes and 36 seconds without a field
goal before Lea ended the drought with a jumper with 53
seconds left to cut the lead to 60-55.
The Seahawks had an opportunity to tie
the game late when Kapper connected on a three-pointer and
with 47 seconds left to cut the lead to 61-59. UNCW's Emily
Roberts was fouled after the basket and went to the line to
shoot two free throws. But Roberts missed both free throw
attempts and Young pulled down the rebound. Young then hit
three free throws in the next 12 seconds and Koshansky
connected on two more free throws with 14 seconds left to
ice the win.
