DE -- Junior forward Tiffany Young posted her
second double-double of the season with 12 points and a
career-high tying 14 rebounds to lead five scorers in double
figures as the University of Delaware women's basketball
team took over in the second half for a 66-56 Colonial
Athletic Association victory over Virginia Commonwealth
Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (11-3, 3-2 CAA) won their
second straight game as they overcame a three-point halftime
deficit with a quick second half start. Freshman guard
Liz Hayes added 12 points, hit three three-pointers,
including two early in the second half, and dished out three
assists, and forward Tiara Malcom, guard Julie
Sailer, and guard Alena Koshansky (#22 at
right) each added 10 points to lead the balanced effort.
The Hens put five scorers in double figures for the first
time since a win over Drexel Feb. 4, 2001.
Virginia Commonwealth, which has lost
four of its last six games, fell to 5-8 (2-3 CAA) despite an
outstanding effort from senior guard Cyndy Wilks. Wilks, the
CAA's leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, erupted for 30
points as she hit on 9 of 17 shots from the field and 11 of
13 free throws. She also pulled a team-high nine rebounds.
Wilks hit for over 20 points for the seventh time this
season but the rest of her teammates combined for just 26
points.
The Rams could not overcome 26 turnovers
for the game and 38.1 percent shooting from the field (8 of
21) in the second half.
Delaware is now 5-2 at the Bob Carpenter
Center this season and improved to 11-0 when holding an
opponent under 60 points. Delaware's win was its fifth
straight over the Rams.
An evenly matched first half featured
nine lead changes with the Rams taking the advantage for
good at 25-24 with 4:33 left to play on a layup by Wilks.
Two free throws by Wilks with 1:45 left gave VCU its biggest
lead of the half at 33-26 before the Hens rallied to cut the
halftime deficit to 33-30 on jumpers by Young and
Karleena Tobin.
Hayes sparked the Hens early in the
second half as she nailed consecutive three-pointers in the
first 1:18 of the stanza as Delaware took the lead for good
at 36-33. After a Wilks layup cut the Delaware lead to 40-39
with 14:10 remaining, the Hens put the game away with a 10-0
run, going up 50-39 with 10:50 remaining. Sailer highlighted
the run with five points during the stretch and Malcom and
Tobin each added jumpers.
Virginia Commonwealth never got closer
than eight points the rest of the way as the Hens converted
12 of 27 shots from the field for the second half. The Hens
built the lead to as much as 15 points at 64-49 with 2:17
remaining following a 9-4 run.
