Virginia Commonwealth 81, Delaware 70 February 5, 2004 Hens Let Big Halftime Lead Slip Away in Loss to Hot-Shooting Rams Complete Game Statistics RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware suffered through a seven-minute scoring drought in the second half as Virginia Commonwealth overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and upended the Blue Hens 81-70 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball game Thursday night at ALLTEL Pavilion. The Blue Hens, who suffered their second straight CAA loss on the road, led 43-33 at halftime but didn't score for over seven minutes early in the second half, allowing the Rams to tie the score at 51-51 and move on from there. Junior guard Julie Sailer (at right) led four Delaware scorers in doubles figures with 16 points while junior forward Tiara Malcom added 15 points, junior forward Tiffany Young chipped in with 10 points, and sophomore guard Amanda Blackstone came off the bench to add a career-high 10 points. The Hens, who return home to host William & Mary Sunday at 3 p.m., fell to 13-6, 5-5 CAA. Virginia Commonwealth, which improved to 8-10 (5-5 CAA), got another big performance from guard Cyndy Wilks, who scored a game-high 29 points and hit on all 10 of her shots from the foul line and guard Meagan Evans contributed 14 points off the bench. Wilks, the CAA's leading scorer at 21.8 points per game, hit for 30 points in Delaware's 66-56 win Jan. 18 at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Rams snapped a five-game losing streak to Delaware, defeating the Blue Hens for the first time since Jan. 6, 2001. The game featured 49 fouls and 49 turnovers between the two teams and the squads combined to hit 47 of 56 free throws. VCU, which shot 57 percent from the field in each half and connected on 27 of 47 for the game, nailed 22 of 25 from the charity. Delaware kept pace by hitting 25 of its 31 free throws. Everything went right for Delaware in the first half as the Hens broke out to a 43-33 lead at intermission thanks to Sailer's 12 points in the stanza. After VCU jumped out to an 11-4 lead, the Blue Hens stormed back with a 17- 0 run that put them up 20-11 with 11:55 remaining in the half. Delaware held the Rams without a field goal for a span of seven minutes and 15 seconds. The Hens also closed the half by scoring 12 of the final 17 points of the stanza. But VCU turned the tables in the second half. Delaware upped the lead to as much as 14 points at 51-39 on a jumper by Malcom, but the Hens wouldn't score again for the next seven minutes as VCU scored 12 straight points to tie the game at 51-51 with 12:02 remaining and added eight more consecutive points as part of a 20-0 run to take a 59-51 advantage with 10:47 remaining. Wilks led the way with 10 of the points during the run. The Hens finally ended the drought when Young connected on a layup with 10:25 remaining. But the Rams quickly upped the lead to 10 points and never looked back, going up by as much as 15 points at 75-60 with 3:14 remaining.
