Dominion Defeats Delaware, 78-78 in
Overtime, To Win CAA Women's Basketball
Tournament Championship

VA (March 12, 2005) -- Shareese Grant
scored a career-high 35 points and made a
game-clinching steal and lay-up in the
final seconds as the second-seeded Old
Dominion women's basketball team defeated
top-seeded Delaware, 78-74 in overtime, in
the Colonial Athletic Association
Tournament Championship Saturday afternoon
at the Patriot Center on the campus of
George Mason University.
The
Monarchs, who had lost to the Blue Hens in
both of the teams' regular season meetings
this season, improved to 22-8 and won
their 14th consecutive CAA Tournament
Championship to earn the league's
automatic bid to the NCAA Division I
Tournament. Delaware, which had its
five-game winning streak snapped to fall
to 25-5, will hope for an at-large bid to
the Big Dance. The Blue Hens, who have now
lost to Old Dominion in each of the last
three years in the conference tournament
including the 2003 final, made their only
NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001 after
winning the America East Tournament
title.

Show will air at 5 p.m. Sunday on
ESPN.
The Blue
Hens jumped out to a 35-28 halftime lead
and maintained their advantage through
most of the second half. Delaware led
58-50 with 6:53 remaining after senior
forward Tiara Malcom (Wilmington,
DE/Caravel Academy) hit a pair of free
throws but Grant hit a jumper, Tish Lyons
added a free throw, TJ Jordan nailed a
three-pointer, and Tiffany Green converted
a lay-up to quickly tie the game at 58-58
with 5:19 to play.
After
senior forward Tiffany Young (Fairfax,
VA/Fairfax - right) put Delaware back
ahead with two foul shots Grant answered
with a pair of jumpers, and nailed a third
following a free throw by sophomore guard
Alena Koshansky (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) to
put Old Dominion up 64-61 with 2:04 on the
clock. Delaware answered as sophomore
guard Tyresa Smith (Dover, DE/Polytech)
scored and hit the ensuing free throw to
tie the game with 1:47 left, and after
another jumper by Grant, Smith converted
another three-point play to put Delaware
up 67-66 with 57 seconds to
play.
Smith then
blocked a shot by Grant and hit one of two
free throws to give the Blue Hens a 68-66
lead with 38 seconds left, but Grant tied
the game with a jumper at the 13 second
mark and, following a timeout, Delaware
could not get a final shot off in
regulation.
The Blue
Hens struck first in overtime as Young
converted a three-point play, but Jordan
responded with a three-pointer to tie the
game at 71-71 with 3:45 remaining. Young
hit one free throw for Delaware, but Grant
drained a jumper and later added a free
throw to put the Monarchs ahead 74-72 with
1:59 to play. Smith hit one of two free
throws to bring the Blue Hens within one,
but Shahida Williams drained two foul
shots to make it a 76-73 game with 1:23 on
the clock.
Malcom was
fouled and hit one free throw with 37
seconds left to bring Delaware within two,
and the Blue Hens had a chance to tie with
10 seconds left when senior guard Julie
Sailer (Washington Crossing, PA/Council
Rock) picked up a loose ball. However,
Grant immediately stole the ball from
Sailer and hit a lay-up in the lane to put
the game away.
"I thought
we played a great game. Obviously, when
you lose in overtime to the 13-time
defending champion, it's a great game,"
Delaware ninth-year head coach Tina Martin
said. "We had our opportunities. We had
some good looks in overtime. I thought we
rushed a little bit on our lay-ups when we
got the ball inside. Old Dominion deserved
to win. We had looks that we didn't
finish. My players played their hearts
out; we just came up short. It's very
disappointing."
Young led
Delaware with a career-high 23 points and
nine rebounds off the bench, while Malcom
finished with 19 points and seven
rebounds. The 2005 CAA Player of the Year
also hit 13-of-16 free throws and has now
made a league record 531 foul shots in her
career. Smith also had a solid all-around
game for the Blue Hens, as she finished
with 18 points, eight rebounds, three
assists, and a game-high four
steals.
Grant, who
hit 15-of-19 shots from the field while
adding seven assists, scored 15 of the
Monarchs' last 20 points, includiing the
final 10 in regulation. Jordan was the
only other Old Dominion player in double
figures with 11 points but hit just
3-of-12 shots from behind the arc. Green
finished with nine points and seven boards
while Lyons pulled down a team-best eight
rebounds for the Monarchs, who improved to
41-0 all-time in the CAA
Tournament.
Delaware
looked intent on ending that streak early
on, as the Blue Hens used a 13-3 run to
take a 28-17 lead with 6:42 remaining in
the opening half when Young nailed a
jumper. The Monarchs twice got within five
late in the period before Malcom hit a
pair of free throws to give the Blue Hens
the seven-point halftime lead.
Old
Dominion closed within 38-35 at the 16:04
mark of the second half, but Delaware
answered with seven of the next nine
points to go up 45-37 with 14:15 remaining
after freshman guard Melissa Czorniewy
(Bergenfield, NJ/Holy Angels) swished a
jumper. The Monarchs twice pulled within
four, the second time at 54-50 with 8:30
left, but Young hit a jumper and Malcom
nailed two free throws to put Delaware up
eight before Old Dominion made its
run.
Malcom and
Young represented Delaware on the
All-Tournament Team and were joined by
Lawona Davis of Old Dominion, Narissa
Suber of Drexel, and Meredith Alexis of
James Madison. Grant was named the
tournament's Most Oustanding Performer for
the third straight year.
