Second Half by Young Leads Delaware to
Seventh Straight Win With 57-48 Victory
over Drexel

NEWARK,
DE -- Senior forward Tiffany Young (at
right) scored 12 of her game-high 18
points in the second half, including eight
over a three-minute span late in the game,
as the University of Delaware edged Drexe
University 57-48 for its seventh straight
victory Thursday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Young
came off the bench to convert 7 of 9 shots
from the field and also pulled a team-high
11 rebounds as the Blue Hens won their
seventh straight to improve to 9-2 overall
and open the Colonial Athletic Association
season with a 2-0 mark heading into
Sunday's showdown at 13-time defending
champion Old Dominion.
Drexel
(5-4, 0-1 CAA), playing for the first time
since late December, got 16 points and 11
rebounds from Catherine Scanlon and 15
points off the bench from Narissa Suber
but was hurt by 25 turnovers and 31.9
percent shooting (15 of 47) from the
field. The Dragons entered the game as one
of the national leaders with just 12.6
turnovers per game but doubled that total
as they committed 15 in the opening half.
The
win was Delaware's 13th straight over the
Dragons since the 1998-99 season and
Delaware held an opponent under 60 points
for the seventh time in the last eight
games.
Tiara
Malcom added 15 points and four rebounds
for the Blue Hens while guard Tyresa Smith
added eight points and three steals and
guard Alena Koshansky added four assists
and five steals with her only basket of
the night a three-pointer with 1:31 left
that sealed the victory.
Delaware
held Drexel scoreless for just over eight
minutes in the first half to build a 15-4
lead but the Dragons rallied by outscoring
the Blue Hens 12-3 over one late stretch
to narrow the margin to 25-20 at the half.
Drexel
tied the score on a three-pointer by Suber
five minutes into the second half and
after a brief Delaware run, tied it again
at 34-34 when Suber nailed two free throws
with 8:49 left. The Dragons held the lead
for the next four minutes before Delaware
tied it at 43-43 on a jumper by Malcom and
took the lead for good on a layup by Young
with 3:54 remaining.
Drexel
cut the lead to two at 47-45 with 3:02
left on two free throws by Martin, but
Malcom answered with two free throws,
Koshansky hit a big three-pointer with
1:31 left, and Julie Sailer followed with
two free throws to put the game away.
