Delaware
Downs Drexel for 14th Straight Time with
49-46 Victory
DATE:
February 24, 2005
PHILADELPHIA
-- Senior forward Tiara Malcom (right) hit
on 9 of 12 shots from the field and
finished with a team-high 19 points as the
University of Delaware women's basketball
squad led from start to finish on the way
to edging Drexel 49-46 in Colonial
Athletic Association action Thursday night
at the Daskalakis Center.
The Blue
Hens, who had lost two of their last three
games, maintained their first place lead
in the CAA standings as they improved to
21-4 overall and 14-2 in conference
action. Drexel, which entered the game in
third place in the CAA standings behind
Delaware and Old Dominion, lost its first
conference home game of the season in
seven tries and fell to 16-8 (10-5 CAA).
Tiffany
Young added 10 points and seven rebounds
for the Blue Hens while Katrina Martin led
Drexel with a game-high 23 points and
Catherine Scanlon added 10 points and nine
rebounds.
"We kept
the lead the entire game and that was the
biggest thing tonight," said Delaware head
coach Tina Martin. "Drexel had not lost a
home conference game all season so we knew
they would come in with a lot of
confidence. It was important that we got
off to a good start. We knew we needed to
come in and get the job done. We had an
excellent defensive effort tonight.
Delaware
defeated rival Drexel for the 14th
straight time over seven seasons and
extended its road winning streak to 11
games and its CAA road win streak to nine
games since last season. The Hens have won
18 of their last 20 games overall.
The Blue
Hens scored the first basket of the game
and never trailed the entire contest.
Drexel cut the lead to 9-6 early but the
Hens followed with an 11-2 run to go up
20-8 and used another 7-4 run to take
their biggest lead of the night at 27-12.
Drexel hung tough and pulled to within
32-25 at halftime.
Delaware
stayed in front the entire second half but
Drexel used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to
47-46 with 2:39 left when Narissa Suber
hit a jumper. The Hens got some breathing
room when Malcom hit a shot in the lane
with 1:25 left to up the margin to three
points at 49-46.
Drexel
turned the ball over on its next
possession and later got the ball back
again with the chance to tie when
Delaware's Julie Sailer missed a short
jumper. Drexel had the chance to tie but
Jackie Falson missed on a three-pointer
and teammate Nicole Hester pulled down the
rebounds but stepped out of bounds with
5.6 seconds left.
The Hens
had the chance to ice it when Sailer went
to the foul line with two seconds left,
but the senior missed the front end of a
one and one, giving the Dragons one last
chance. Drexel had just 1.3 seconds to go
the length of the court but couldn't get
it done as Suber's long shot just before
the buzzer fell way short.
