Delaware
Comes Out Fast in Second Half, Wins 15th
Straight With 68-40 Victory Over George
Mason
Date:
February 3, 2005
FAIRFAX,
VA -- Senior forward Tiffany Young,
starting for the first time since Dec. 4,
scored a game-high 15 points and added
seven rebounds and Delaware used a 13-2
run to open the second half to break open
a one-point game as the Blue Hens cruised
to a 68-40 Colonial Athletic Association
women's basketball victory over George
Mason Thursday night at the Patriot
Center.
The
Blue Hens (17-2, 10-0 CAA) extended the
longest current win streak in NCAA
Division I women's basketball to 15
straight as Young led four scorers in
double figures. George Mason, which also
lost to Delaware 72-56 back on Jan. 16 at
the Bob Carpenter Centere, dropped its
third straight to fall to 8-10, 4-5 CAA.
The Patriot Center will be the site of the
CAA Tournament later in March.
Young,
who has been one of Delaware's top players
all season long coming off the bench, got
the chance to start Thursday with starter
Amanda Blackstone sideline with an ankle
injury suffered in Tuesday's practice.
Young led a balanced efffort as Tiara
Malcom added 12 points and five rebounds,
Liz Hayes scored 12 points and connected
on a career-high four three-pointers, and
Tyresa Smith contributed 11 points, seven
rebounds, five assists, and matched her
own school record with eight steals.
Delaware,
which scored 24 points off George Mason's
25 turnovers, has now won each of its last
seven games by 11 or more points during
the streak. The Hens held a 37-29
advantage on the boards and hit on 20 of
21 shots from the foul line. The Patriots
hit just 17 of 52 shots from the field
(.327), including just 3 of 21 from beyond
the three-point line.
George
Mason did not put a player in double
figures but got eight points each from
Moni Akintunde, Kristin Higy, and Julie
Flanders. Flanders also pulled a game-high
seven rebounds.
"I'm
proud of the way we played tonight," said
Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose
team will take on the CAA's last place
team UNC Wilmington Sunday in North
Carolina. "George Mason really attacked
our zone but we fought through it and did
some nice things tonight. Liz Hayes had
one the best games of her career and
Tiffany stepped up again for us and really
showed how much she has
matured."
Delaware
survived a sluggish first half by both
teams and took a slim 22-21 lead into
intermission. But the Blue Hens came out
hot in the second half, scoring the first
eight points of the half to go up 30-21
before George Mason got its first points
on a basket by Higy with 16:05 left.
Delaware continued on a 13-2 run and
eventually outscored the Patriots 24-6
over an 11-minute span to take control for
good.
The
Blue Hens currently own the longest
current win streak in NCAA I women's
basketball. Gonzaga took a 14-game win
streak into Thursday nigiht's game vs. St.
Mary's (CA) while Temple will take a
14-game win streak into their game Sunday
afternoon.
