Young's Play Off the Bench, Impressive Foul Shooting Send Blue Hens to 70-54 Win Over Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- For the second straight game, a big effort off the bench from forward Tiffany Young and pin-point accuracy from the foul line led the University of Delaware women's basketball victory.

Young scored a game-high 17 points and pulled nine rebounds and Delaware converted 27 of 28 shots from the foul line as the Blue Hens posted a 70-54 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra University Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Arena.

Delaware (14-2, 7-0 CAA), which also got 10 points and eight rebounds from forward Tiara Malcom and 10 points and five rebounds from guard Tyresa Smith, remained alone at the top of the CAA standings as the Hens posted their 12th straight victory. The 12 straight wins is the longest streak for the Hens since the 2000-01 NCAA Tournament team won 17 straight.

Hofstra (8-8, 3-4 CAA) got 16 points and 15 rebounds from Lizanne Murphy, 16 points from Vanessa Gidden, and 12 points from guard Cigi McCollin. Murphy posted her league-leading ninth double-double of the season while the Hens held McCollin, the league's leading scorer, four points under her average.

Hofstra held a 20-18 lead late in the first half after a three-pointer by Murphy before Young took over, scoring six of Delaware's eight points in an 8-2 run to close the half and give the Hens a 26-22 advantage at intermission. Delaware came out strong in the second half with another 8-2 run as Young converted a three-point play and Alena Koshansky buried a three-pointer for a 34-24 lead.

The Pride hung tough and cut the gap back to six points at 34-28 with 16:28 left on a three-point play by McCollin. But the Hens countered with their biggest run of the day to put the game away. Amanda Blackstone opened an 18-2 run with a three-pointer and later added another triple with 10:40 remaining to up the Delaware lead to 50-30.

Hofstra went an agonizing stretch of over nine minutes in which it missed 13 straight field goal attempts and turned the ball over four times. By the time Murphy ended the field goal drought with 7:16 left, Delaware was up 54-35.

"I wasn't happy with the way we played in the first half, we seemed to sputtering along," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose squad downed Hofstra for the 10th consecutive time. "We challenged them at halftime and they picked it up in the second half. Tiffany has played tremendously the last two games, which is just what we've expected of her."

Young, who is averaging 10.5 points and 6.4 rebounds in a reserve role this season, came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points and pulled nine rebounds in Delaware's 63-52 victory at Towson Wednesday night.

Both teams struggled throughout the day holding on to the ball and hitting shots from the field. Delaware shot just 30.3 percent from the field (20 of 66) for the game and committed 21 turnovers but Hofstra committed 22 turnovers and shot just 23.4 percent from the field, hitting 15 of 64 shots. Delaware, however, held a commanding 57-42 advantage on the boards.
