Scores 25 Points as Hens Hold Off Second
Half JMU Rallies and Post 14th Straight

NEWARK,
DE -- Tiara Malcom (right) scored a
season-high 25 points and the University
of Delaware held off several second half
rallies by James Madison to post their
14th straight victory with a 66-55
Colonial Athletic Association women's
basketball win Sunday afternoon at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
The
Blue Hens, who share the nation's second
longest win streak with Gonzaga and Temple
at 14 straight, improved to 16-2 overall
and remained unbeaten in CAA play with a
9-0 mark. Delaware also won its 11th
straight home game as Alena Koshansky
added 12 points, including three
three-pointers, and Tiffany Young came off
the bench to contribute 10 points.
Malcom,
the CAA pre-season Player of the Year and
Delaware's leading scorer and rebounder,
hit on 7 of 14 shots from the field and
converted 11 of 12 free throws, upping her
career free throw total to 464 to move
into third place on the CAA career list.
She also pulled a team-high seven rebounds
and collected three steals.
James
Madison, which swept the season series
from Delaware a year ago, fell to 11-7
(4-5 CAA) despite 14 points from guard
Lesley Dickinson. Freshman Tamera Young
added 12 points and pulled a career-high
15 rebounds. The Dukes shot just 29.7
percent from the field (19 of 64) for the
game and converted just 3 of 16
three-pointers. James Madison posted a
48-37 advantage on the boards and pulled
22 offensive rebounds but couldn't
overcome 21 turnovers.
Delaware
also had its troubles from the field,
converting just 34.7 percent from the
field (17 of 49), but hit on 29 of 38 free
throws and committed 16
turnovers.
Led
by Malcom's 16 first half points, the Hens
took the lead for good in the first five
minutes of the game and took a 32-24
advantage into intermission.
James
Madison gradually got back into the game
in the second half, cutting the deficit to
three points at 36-33 as Young scored all
the points in a 5-0 run and converted a
layup with 15:20 left to play. The Dukes
trailed by just four points at 39-35 with
13:48 left but went cold from there.
Delaware followed with an 11-0 run capped
by a jumper by Sailer for a 50-35 lead
with 6:50 remaining. James Madison turned
the ball over eight times and missed all
five of its shots during the run.
But
the Dukes turned things around quickly,
mounting another rally with a 15-3 run to
cut the lead to 53-50 with 2:44 remaining
capped by a jumper by Dickinson, who
scored six points during the run. But that
was as close as the Dukes would get as the
Hens converted 9 of 10 free throws down
the stretch to preserve the win.
