Captures Christmas City Classic with 65-51
Victory Over Host Lehigh

PA -- Tiffany Young (right) came off the
bench to score 12 points and pull a
game-high 10 rebounds and tournament Most
Valuable Player Tiara Malcom added 14
points, seven rebounds, and a career-high
six assists as the University of Delaware
women's basketball team captured the
Christmas City Classic title with a
wire-to-wire 65-51 victory over host
Lehigh University Thursday night at
Stabler Arena.
The
Blue Hens, who posted their first-ever
victory over a Southeast Conference foe
Wednesday night with a 67-59 first round
comeback win over Alabama, continued their
winning ways vs. the host Mountain Hawks
as they extended their winning streak to
five games and improved to 7-2 on the
season. The Hens, who committed just 10
turnovers vs. Lehigh, have held four of
their opponents under 60 points during the
winning streak.
"We
had a very determined group here this week
and these were two good wins for us," said
Delaware head coach Tina Martin, who moved
to within one win of her 150th career
victory with the Blue Hens. "Everyone
played well for us and fortunately we
didn't have a let down after the big win
over Alabama. We are thrilled to be going
home with two wins here and heading into
conference play on a high
note."
Delaware
will open Colonial Athletic Association
play this Sunday at Virginia Commonwealth
in Richmond, VA. The Blue Hens are the
pre-season No. 2 pick behind Old Dominion
to capture the league crown.
Malcom,
who scored 21 points vs. Alabama, hit on 7
of 15 shots from the field and finished
with a team-high 14 points to earn the
tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
She was joined on the all-tournament team
by sophomore guard Tyresa Smith, who
recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, and
three steals vs. Lehigh. Melissa Czorniewy
added eight points off the bench for the
Hens.
Lehigh
(7-3), which defeated Yale in the first
round to advance to the finals, got 17
points and six rebounds from Jessica
DePalo while Sara Ellis added 16 points
and Adrienne Blount came off the bench to
add 13 points.
Malcom
and Smith were joined on the
all-tournament team by Alabama's Lauren
Hill, Chinenye Okafor of Yale, and DePalo.
Alabama captured the consolation game with
a 78-60 win over Yale as Monique Bivins
led the way with 19 points.
Lehigh
opened the scoring on a jumper by DePalo
27 seconds into the game but Delaware
guard Alena Koshansky answered with a
three-pointer just 13 seconds later and
the Blue Hens never trailed
again.
Despite
shooting just 37.8 percent from the field
(14 of 37), the Hens led by as much as 11
points in the first half before settling
for a 10-point advantage at 33-23 at the
break. By halftime, nine different
Delaware players had scored led by Young's
eight points and five rebounds off the
bench.
Led
by Malcom's 10 second half points, the
Hens increased the lead to as much as 16
points at 50-34 on a jumper by Czorniewy
with 10:34 left to play. Lehigh cut the
lead under double digits just once in the
second half when a DePalo foul shot
narrowed the margin to 54-45 with 4:46
remaining, but Malcom answered with a
jumper and Czorniewy added two more
baskets as part of a 6-0 run and the Hens
were never threatened again.
