Hens Use Inside Game, Clutch Foul Shooting
to Down Towson 63-52 for 11th Straight

-- Forward Tiffany Young (right) came off

and pull nine rebounds, guard Tyresa Smith
added 14 points, and forward Tiara Malcom
chipped in with 12 points as the
University of Delaware women's basketball
team posted its 11th straight victory with
a 63-52 Colonial Athletic Association
victory over host Towson Thursday night at
the Towson Center.
The Blue
Hens improved to 13-2 overall and remained
unbeaten in CAA play with a mark of 6-0.
Delaware, which has not lost since early
December, has posted its longest winning
streak since the 2000-01 season when the
Hens won 17 straight on the way to an
America East conference title and NCAA
Tournament berth.
Towson,
which got 18 points and 10 rebounds from
forward Tierra Jackson, fell to 11-6 (4-2
CAA) and was hurt by 33 percent shooting
from the field, including hitting just 6
of 28 first half shots. The Tigers were
also outscored 26-11 at the foul line.
Kelli Talbot and Kelly Robinson each added
10 points for Towson.
Young hit
on 5 of 8 shots from the field and 9 of 10
free throws to pace the Blue Hen inside
game. Smith also added four assists and
Malcom pulled down five rebounds and
posted four steals before fouling out late
in the game. The Hens hit 26 of 36 free
throws but were especially accurate in the
second half when they hit on 22 of 28 from
the charity stripe, including 10 of 12 in
the final minutes.
"Tiffany
and Tiara really stepped up today and got
the job done," said Delaware head coach
Tina Martin, whose team defeated Towson
for the ninth straight time since the
1999-2000 season. "This was a tough,
physical game and Towson can push you
around underneath. But we showed the right
mentality to compete inside and get the
job done. I'm proud of the way we played
tonight."
Towson
scored the first basket of the game but
that was the only time Delaware would
trail all evening. The Hens took advantage
of poor Towson shooting in the first
stanza and took a 25-15 lead into
intermission when guard Alena Koshansky
buried a three-pointer with 15 seconds
left in the half.
The Hens
led by double-digits for most of the
second half and extended the lead to as
much as 14 points several times, including
a 53-39 margin with 5:17 remaining when
Young converted two free throws.
But Towson
battled back by scoring the next eight
points with Jackson scoring six and
Robinson hitting a layup with 1:53
remaining to cut the margin to 53-47.
Delaware didn't hit another field goal,
but recovered anyway by hitting 10 of 12
free throws the rest of the way, including
four from Smith, for the 11-point
victory.
