Leads the Way Again as Blue Hens Pull Away
in Second Half for 56-40 Win Over UNC

DE (January 14, 2005) -- Senior forward
Tiara Malcom posted her 15th career
double-double with 23 points and a
season-high 11 rebounds as the University
of Delaware broke open a close game with a
second half burst on the way to a 56-40
Colonial Athletic Association women's
basketball triumph over UNC Wilmington
Friday night at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Delaware
(11-2, 4-0 CAA), coming off a 73-70 win
over Old Dominion Sunday that snapped the
Monarchs' 122-game home league winning
streak, won its ninth straight game and
remained in first place in the CAA
standings but needed a big second half
effort to post the victory. The Hens
outscored UNC Wilmington 34-19 in the
second stanza and held the Seahawks (4-9,
1-3 CAA) to just 20.7 percent shooting for
the half.
Malcom,
the pre-season CAA Player of the Year, hit
on 8 of 14 shots from the field and 7 of 8
from the foul line and also blocked four
shots in leading Delaware to its eighth
straight win at home since last February.
The Hens are 5-0 at the Bob Carpenter
Center this season.
Senior
forward Tiffany Young came off the bench
to add 14 points and nine rebounds while
freshman guard Melissa Czorniewy (right)
scored a career-high nine points and added
four rebounds off the bench.
UNC
Wilmington, which lost its third straight
game, was led by forward Meagan Samis with
team-highs of 13 points and seven
rebounds. The Seahawks shot just 29.6
percent from the field for the game at 16
of 54 and missed on all 14 of their
three-point attempts. UNC Wilmington hit
just 6 of 29 second half shots
(.207).
The
Seahawks led for most of the first half
and went up by as much as seven points at
16-9 after Lindsay Isom converted a layup
with 9:54 left in the opening stanza.
Delaware rallied and took the lead for
good at 22-21 when Malcom scored the last
points of the half with 1:40 left.
Delaware
led the rest of the way thanks to a quick
start in the second half. The Hens scored
the first five points of the second half,
including four by Malcom, to go up 27-21
and held the Seahawks to just five points
in the first 10 minutes of the stanza.
The
Hens took their first double-digit lead at
37-26 when Malcom converted inside with
10:21 remaining but UNC Wilmington
answered with two free throws by Isom and
a jumper by Lori Drake to cut the lead to
seven at 37-30. But the Hens came back
with a decisive 13-3 run to put the game
away as Young scored six of her points in
the span and UD upped the lead to 50-33
with 3:49 remaining.
