Shooting by Hayes Lifts Delaware to 16th
Straight Win in 59-47 Victory Over UNC

WILMINGTON,
NC -- Sophomore guard Liz Hayes (right)
scored a game-high 15 points, including
two clutch three-pointers in the second
half and six game-clinching free throws in
the final minute to lead the University of
Delaware women's basketball team to its
16th straight victory with a 59-47 win
over UNC Wilmington Sunday afternoon at
the Trask Coliseum.
Tiara
Malcom added 14 points and five rebounds,
Tyresa Smith contributed 13 points, five
rebounds, and five assists, and Tiffany
Young pulled a team-high eight rebounds as
Delaware improved to 18-2 (11-0 Colonial
Athletic Association) and extended the
longest win streak in NCAA Division I
women's basketball to 16 games. The 16
straight wins is the second longest in
school history behind a 17-game win streak
in 2000-01 when Delaware advanced to the
NCAA Tournament. The Hens have also won
eight straight games by 10 or more points
and have won by double figures in 11 of
the last 12.
UNC
Wilmington, mired in last place in the
CAA, dropped their ninth game in the last
10 outings and fell to 5-15 (2-9 CAA).
Freshman Megan Samis led the Seahawks with
14 points and 11 rebounds while Emily
Roberts added 10 points. UNC Wilmington
has dropped five straight games to the
Hens.
Delaware's
win set up a big showdown this Friday,
Feb. 11 when the first place Blue Hens
will host 13-time defending CAA champion
Old Dominion at 7 p.m. at the Bob
Carpenter Center. Delaware won the last
meeting between the two teams by a 73-70
back on Jan. 9 in Norfolk, VA, snapping
the Monarchs' 122-game conference home
winning streak. Old Dominion will enter
Friday's game with a 14-6 record and a
current second place standing in the CAA
with a mark of 9-1.
"This
is a tough place to play so we are happy
to leave here with a win," said Delaware
head coach Tina Martin, whose team led
26-21 at halftime and stayed in front the
rest of the way. "We made some good
adjustments at halftime and played well in
the second half. Liz really stepped up
again and hit some huge shots for us. We
now have a few days to prepare for Old
Dominion. Our kids are excited about the
game and hopefully it will be a good one
and a lot of fun. We have so much respect
for ODU."
Hayes,
who connected for four three-pointers and
scored 12 points in the Hens' 68-40 win at
George Mason Thursday, was clutch from
long range once again. The backup point
guard connected on three three-pointers
for the game, including one with 9:33 left
with Hens leading just 35-34. Just over a
minute later she connected from long
distance again to up the Hens' lead to
43-36 with 8:16 remaining.
UNC
Wilmington held on late in the game and
trailed 52-45 entering the final minute
but Hayes made sure there would be no
comeback as she hit on all six free throws
in the final minute to preserve the win
for the Hens.
