Start Sends Delaware to Sixth Straight Win
as Blue Hens Down VCU 69-44 in CAA

scored 14 points to lead a balanced
scoring effort as the University of
Delaware women's basketball team won its
sixth straight game by posting a 69-44
victory over Virginia Commonwealth Sunday
afternoon at ALLTEL Pavilion in both
teams' Colonial Athletic Association
opener.
The
Blue Hens improved to 8-2 and won their
fifth straight conference opener,
including all four in the CAA. The Rams
fell to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in league
play.
In
addition to Sailer's season-high 14
points, Delaware got 13 apiece from Alena
Koshansky and Tyresa Smith, while Tiffany
Young came off the bench to add 11 points.
Maria Giovannetti scored a game-high 16
points for Virginia Commonwealth, but no
other Ram scored more than six.
The
Blue Hens took control early by scoring
the first 13 points of the game and
holding Virginia Commonwealth scoreless
until the 13:06 mark, and led 22-4 with
7:17 left in the first half when Sailer
nailed a jump shot. The Rams responded
with a 13-5 run to get within 27-17 with
1:15 remaining in the period before Smith
hit one of two free throw attempts to give
Delaware an 11-point halftime
lead.
The
Blue Hens, who have held five of their
last six opponents under 60 points,
limited the Rams to just five field goals
and a 20.0 field goal percentage in the
opening period.
Virginia
Commonwealth, which was picked third in
the CAA Preseason Poll, closed within
28-22 with 16:30 to play before Koshansky
answered with a lay-up to put Delaware up
eight. The Rams were still within 31-24
with 14:57 remaining, but the Blue Hens
put the game away with a 17-3 run, capped
by a Liz Hayes three-pointer, to take a
48-27 advantage with 8:29 left.
Delaware
was not threatened the rest of the way,
going up by as many as 27 points twice,
the final time at 69-42 on two free throws
by Sailer with 42 seconds left before the
Rams' Meagan Evans hit a jumper 13 seconds
later to close the scoring.
Young
and Tiara Malcom each tied for the team
lead with six rebounds while Amanda
Blackstone dished out a game-high four
assists for the Blue Hens, who allowed a
season-low 44 points.
"I'm
really pleased with the victory," said
Delaware ninth-year head coach Tina
Martin, who recorded her 150th career win.
"It is a great road win and a wonderful
way to start conference play. We really
did well in our attack mode, and our
players did a great job attacking their
pressure."
The
Blue Hens will look for their seventh
straight victory on Thursday when they
host Drexel at 7 p.m. at the Carpenter
Center.
