Malcom, Sailer Lead the Way But Hens Drop Arizona Tournament Opener to Weber State, 67-60

TUCSON, AZ - Tiara Malcom (Wilmington, DE/Caravel) scored 19 points and Julie Sailer (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock - at right)) added 13 points and eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hens dropped a 67-60 verdict to Weber State in the opening round of the University of Arizona Tournament Saturday afternoon at the McKale Center.

The Blue Hens, playing in Arizona for the first time in school history, fell to 2-2 on the year while Weber State improved to 4-1.

Delaware will take on UNC Greensboro in Sunday's consolation game at 3 p.m (ET). Host Arizona downed UNCG 98-46 in the other first round game.

The Blue Hens, who had allowed only five three-point buckets all season, returned from a 26 point tie at the half and allowed five three-pointers in the second half of the game. Despite a first half where Delaware shot 12 for 26 for a 46.2 shooting percentage, the Hens shot 13 for 33 and was outscored in the second half 41-34 as the nine total three-pointers allowed in the game is the most they have allowed in a single game all season.

Weber State got 16 points and nine rebounds from guard Julie Gjertsen, 15 points off the bench from Sheila Robertson, and 11 points from Laura Porter.

Amanda Blackstone added six points and a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench for the Blue Hens.

Delaware led by as much as seven poi nts in the first half, going up 20-13 on a Malcom jumper with 7:56 remaining in the stanza. But Weber State got consecutive three-pointers from Robertson and Porter to cut the lead to one and took the lead at 26-24 with 1:48 left on a Gjersten jumper. Malcom's jumper wth 19 seconds left sent the game into intermission tied at 26-26.

Weber State then shot a blistering 61.9 percent from the field on 13 of 21 shooting, including hitting five of seven three-point attempts.

The Hens took a 29-28 lead one minute into the second half on a Tyresa Smith jumper, but Weber State came right back on basket by Becky O'Neil and led the rest of the way.

Delaware cut the lead to three points on a three-pointer from guard Liz Hayes with 9:52 left to narrow the margin to 45-42, but Weber State responded with three-pointers from Porter and Chelsey Warbuton to up the lead to nine at 51-42 with 8:52 left.

The Hens never got closer than five the rest of way, pulling to within 61-56 with 2:06 on a Blackstone jumper, but Weber State put the game away with four straight free throws.
