NEWARK, DE (Dec. 20) -- Junior guard Tyresa Smith (right) led a balanced effort with 15 points and nine rebounds as the University of Delaware cruised to its fourth straight victory with a 65-43 win over Georgetown in non-league women’s basketball action Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Smith was one of four Blue Hen scorers in double figures as Melissa Czorniewy, Karleena Tobin, and Courtney Irving all pitched in with 10 points apiece. Irving hit for a career-high with her 10 points and also pulled five rebounds off the bench while Chrissy Fisher added nine points and Alena Koshansky chipped in with seven points and a game-high six assists.
Delaware, which has now won 12 straight non-league home games at the Bob Carpenter Center, was sharp following an 11-day layoff. The Blue Hens improved to 7-1 on the season and avenged a 67-56 setback to the Hoyas last season in Washington, DC.
Georgetown, which dressed just seven players and played without leading scorer Kieraah Marlow who was injured, fell to 4-4 despite 14 points and eight rebounds from forward Katrina Wheeler and 10 points from Bethany LeSueur. The Hoyas shot just 13 of 47 from the field (27.7 percent), connected on 3 of 11 three-pointers, and committed 20 turnovers.
Both teams were impressive from the foul line as Delaware hit on 12 of 13 shots from the charity stripe and Georgetown connected on 14 of 19 shots from the line. But Delaware shot 43.3 percent from the field (26 of 60) and committed just 13 turnovers to take control.
The Blue Hens scored the first nine points of the game and led from wire-to-wire to pick up the victory. Smith scored six of her points in the first five minutes and Koshansky hit Delaware’s only three-pointer as the Hens jumped out to the 9-0 lead. Georgetown did not score until the 14:42 mark of the first half when LeSueur hit a jumper to cut the lead to 9-2.
After Georgetown cut the lead to 11-6, the Blue Hens scored the next seven points to go up 18-6 and moved on to take a 28-16 lead into intermission. Delaware never let Georgetown back in the game in the second frame as the Hens outscored the Hoyas 16-6 over the first seven minutes to push the lead to 22 at 44-22. The Hens enjoyed their biggest lead at 48-23 with 10:02 remaining and Georgetown never got closer than 17 points over the final 16 minutes of the game.
