HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Lizanne Murphy and Vanessa Gidden scored Hofstra’s final eight points in overtime as the Pride took control midway through the extra period and downed the University of Delaware 91-85 in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Arena.

The Blue Hens, who lost to the Pride for the first time since Jan. 9, 2000 after 11 straight wins, dropped back into a tie for third place in the CAA standings with Hofstra with the loss.

Hofstra (14-8, 9-4 CAA) connected on six of its eight field goal attempts in overtime and took the lead for good when Amaka Agugua hit a layup with 2:14 left to play.

Three different Pride players scored 20 or more points as Agugua led the way with 24 points, Cigi McCollin dropped in 21, including six three-pointers, and Gidden added 20 points. Murphy was right behind with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Delaware (17-5, 9-4 CAA), which lost its third CAA road game in the last four tries, entered the game ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 52.1 points per game, but gave up a season-high 91 points to the Pride. The 91 points was the most allowed by the Hens in their last 197 games since falling to Vermont 94-76 back on Dec. 9, 1999.

Tyresa Smith (at right) led the Hens by scoring 15 of her team-high 23 points in the first half while Melissa Czorniewy finished with 20 points and seven assists, Alena Koshansky supplied 16 points and six assists, and Chrissy Fisher came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Delaware shot 49.2 percent from the field for the game (29 of 59) and hit on 5 of 12 three-pointers but committed 22 turnovers.

“It’s a team loss but I blame myself too today,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, who remains 14-4 all-time vs. the Pride. “We win as a team and we lose as a team and this loss was very disappointing. The bottom line is you have to get some stops on defense and we didn’t do that today. Towson is a big game for us Friday and we have to get ready.”

Hofstra led by as much as 10 points in the first half at 23-13 but the Hens chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the score at 26-26 with 7:16 remaining. Fisher converted four free throws in the final minute and Smith hit a layup just before the first half buzzer to send the Hens into halftime up 44-41.

The hard-fought second half featured four lead changes and three ties, the last at 67-67 with 5:07 left in regulation. Fisher and Czorniewy both hit jumpers to give the Hens the lead and after Gidden converted for Hofstra with 3:13 left, Amanda Blackstone followed with three-pointer with 2:54 left to give the Hens a 74-70 edge.

McCollin followed with two three-pointers in a span of 48 seconds, the last with 1:08 left, to knot the score at 76 76. Both teams had the chance to win it in regulation but Koshansky was called for travelling with nine seconds left and Hofstra’s Murphy missed a baseline jumper just before the final horn.

Fisher hit two jumpers in the first two minutes of overtime and Czorniewy dropped in a pair of free throws with 2:29 left to give the Hens an 82-81 lead. But that would be it for the Hens as Agugua converted a layup 15 seconds later to give the Pride the lead for good at 83-82, Gidden followed with a basket, and Murphy knocked down a jumper and two free throws as part of a 7-0 run to up the margin to 89-82 with 19 seconds remaining.
