NEWARK, DE -- Junior forward Chrissy Fisher led a balanced effort with team-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds and the University of Delaware converted its second highest three-point field goal total in school history in posting a 70-60 non league women’s basketball victory over La Salle University Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Fisher, a first-year transfer from Maryland, led four scorers in doubles figures as she converted 6 of 9 field goals and all four free throws for her 19 points and her second straight double-double after scoring 24 points and pulling 11 rebounds in a 64-38 win over American Sunday. The Hens improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2002-03 and have won their three games by an average margin of 21 points.
La Salle (1-2) got game-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds from forward Crista Ricketts, who converted 10 of 16 shots from the field, while guard Shaune McLaughlin added 16 points and guard Jenna Graber added nine points, six rebounds, and three three-pointers. Leading scorer Carlene Hightower (15.0 ppg) was held to just five points.
Delaware’s Alena Koshansky drained four of Delaware’s season-high nine three-pointers to finish with 14 points while guard Melissa Czorniewy added a career-high 12 points and guard Tyresa Smith chipped in with 12 points and five assists.
The Blue Hens, who won their 10th straight regular season non-league game at home, converted on 9 of 17 three-pointers for the game, the second highest total in school history and the most since making a school record 11 on 34 attempts vs. Princeton on Nov. 23, 1999. In addition to Koshansky’s four, Fisher knocked down three three-pointers and Karleena Tobin and Amanda Blackstone each added one.
Delaware dominated most of the first half, breaking away from a four-point lead by exploding on a 17-0 run over six minutes of action. LaSalle missed 10 straight shots and turned the ball over three times during the run. Smith started the run with a three-point play to put the Hens up 17-10 with 14:04 left in the stanza and Fisher capped the spurt with a three-pointer with 7:49 left to up the lead to 31-10. La Salle finished the half strong and cut the Delaware lead at intermission to 38-27.
The Hens used another big run to open the second half to put the game away. Delaware opened the stanza with 15-4 run to take its biggest lead of the night at 53-31 with 13:53 left to play. The Hens converted three three-pointers - one each by Fisher, Czorniewy, and Blackstone, to highlight the run. La Salle never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way, going on a 10-2 run over the final minute of play to cut the margin.
