NEWARK, DE -- Junior guard Melissa Czorniewy (right) was one of three Blue Hen players to score a career-high in points with 19 as the University of Delaware jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back in overwhelming the University of Pennsylvania 78-34 in women’s basketball non-league action Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (4-1), which entered the game having won all three of its games by 10 or more points this season, added to its collection of one-sided wins as the Blue Hens posted their most lopsided victory since an 86-25 win over Loyola (MD) on Dec. 5, 1987. The win over Penn also gave Delaware 11 straight regular season non-league victories dating back to last season.
Pennsylvania (1-4), which lost its fourth straight game, committed 33 turnovers, including 21 in the opening half, and shot just 9 of 41 from the field for the game for a mark of 22 percent. The Quakers hit just 2 of 18 shots from the field in the first half and 7 of 23 in the second stanza.
Czorniewy (Holy Angles/Bergenfield, NJ), whose previous high was 12 points vs. LaSalle a week ago, hit on 7 of 10 shots from the field and added three assists and four steals to lead the Blue Hens. Chrissy Fisher added 12 points and four rebounds while Arek Deng added a career-high eight points and Courtney Irving posted career-highs with
eight points and seven rebounds. The Hens committed just 11 turnovers, recorded 22 steals (one shy of the school record), shot 51 percent from the field (25 of 49), and hit on 27 of 31 free throws. All nine Blue Hen players who saw action scored at least two points.
All 15 Penn players saw action but only center Jennifer Fleischer reached double figures with a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds. Delaware put the game away early, jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first six minutes before the Quakers, who missed their first five shots and turned the ball over seven times during the span, got on the board
on a jumper with Rachel Wilson with 13:39 left in the stanza. The Hens followed with another 9-0 run, including five points from Czorniewy, to go up 21-4 with 8:31 left in the half. Another 10-2 run by the Hens increased the margin to 29-6 and the Hens took a 40-11 lead into intermission.
Penn never got closer than 24 points in the second half, at 40-16 two minutes into the stanza, and Delaware led by at least 30 points for the final 12 minutes of the game.
