WILMINGTON, NC -- The University of Delaware women’s basketball team’s six-game win streak came to a halt Friday night as the Blue Hens suffered through a tough night on the offensive end of the court and dropped a 55-41 Colonial Athletic Association verdict to UNC Wilmington at the Trask Coliseum.
The Blue Hens (9-2, 1-1 CAA), who lost for the first time since Nov. 27 when they fell to Boston University 61-59, scored just 16 first half points and shot 24 percent from the field for the game in suffering the loss. The Hens’ 41 points was the team’s lowest offensive output since falling to George Mason 47-36 back on Feb. 20, 2003. Delaware has lost just three of its last 24 regular season league games.
Tyresa Smith led the Blue Hens with 12 points while Arek Deng (right) added a career high nine points to go with eight rebounds, Courtney Irving pulled down a career-high nine boards, and Melissa Czorniewy added nine points. The Hens were playing their first game without leading rebounder and second leading scorer Chrissy Fisher, a junior forward who is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks with a foot injury.
UNC Wilmington (8-3, 2-0 CAA) was led by Denise Lawrence’s team-high 15 points while Lori Drake came off the bench to add 12 points and Sahsha Taylor added eight points and pulled a game-high 10 rebounds. The Seahawks shot 61.9 percent from the field (13 of 21) in the first half on their way to a 30-16 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Hens had beaten the Seahawks six straight times and had never lost at Trask Coliseum in three previous trips. The teams will meet again Feb. 10 at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware will host James Madison this Sunday at the BCC at 2 p.m.
“It just didn’t happen tonight for us,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose squad suffered its most lopsided CAA loss since an 84-57 loss at James Madison Feb. 1, 2004. “We just have to go back to the gym tomorrow and get back to teaching because we have a very talented James Madison team coming in this weekend.”
The Hens hit just 6 of 26 shots from the field in the first half and 6 of 24 in the second half to finish at 24 percent (12 of 50) shooting for the night. Delaware also committed 14 turnovers and hit 2 of 8 three-pointers.
The score was tied at 4-4 early on before UNC Wilmington used a 22-5 run to take an insurmountable lead at 26-9 with 4:46 left in the first half. Delaware went a span of nearly 13 minutes in which the Hens scored just one field goal. Lawrence scored seven of her points during the pivotal run while Drake added five points.
The Blue Hens cut the lead to 12 at 34-22 on a Smith jumper three minutes into the second half, but UNC Wilmington outscored Delaware 9-1 over the next five minutes to build the lead to 20 points at 43-23 with 11:53 remaining. The Hens never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
