NEWARK, DE -- Tyresa Smith (right) led four University of Delaware scorers in double figures with 19 points and added 12 rebounds, seven steals, and four assists, and the Blue Hens held Virginia Commonwealth to its lowest scoring output in 25 years in posting a 66-35 Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball victory Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (15-3, 7-2 CAA) won their second straight and their sixth in the last seven games as Smith, who posted her second double-double of the season, narrowly missed the first triple-double in school history and was assisted by Amanda Blackstone’s 14 points and eight rebounds, Melissa Czorniewy’s 14 points, and Courtney Irving’s 10 points and six rebounds. Delaware point guard Alena Koshansky also dished out five assists and registered four of her team’s 16 steals.
Virginia Commonwealth (11-7, 4-5 CAA), which scored just 10 second half points and suffered its lowest scoring total in a game since a 76-33 setback to Virginia during the 1979-80 season, got 12 points and nine rebounds from freshman center Quanitra Hollingsworth and 10 points from guard Michele Cosel.
The Rams, who lost for the third time in the last four games, went 18 minutes and 35 seconds without scoring a field goal before Hollingsworth finally ended the drought with a layup with 3:03 left to play. VCU hit just 2 of 20 shots from the field in the second half and shot just 27.3 percent from the field (12 of 44) for the game while committing 25 turnovers.
Delaware, which is now 8-3 all-time vs. VCU, including a 4-1 mark at the Bob Carpenter Center, remained undefeated at home this season at 8-0 and extended its regular season home winning streak to nine games dating back to last season.
Neither team led by more than three points during the first 12 minutes of the game before the Hens used an 8-0 run to go up 24-15 with 6:06 left in the first half. But VCU battled back and cut the lead to 28-25 when Hollingsworth nailed a jumper with 1:38 left. Delaware eventually took a 30-25 lead into the half.
The second half was all Delaware. The Blue Hens scored the first 10 points of the second stanza to take a comfortable 40-25 lead with 12:18 remaining and outscored the Rams 16-2 over the first 12 minutes.
Virginia Commonwealth, which missed its final two shots in the first half, missed its first 16 from the field during the second stanza and managed to score just five free throws over the first 17 minutes of the second half as the Hens pulled away. The Rams finally got on board when Hollingsworth completed a conventional three-point play with 3:03 remaining, scoring her team’s first field goal since her jumper with 1:38 remaining in the first stanza. Her basket snapped a drought of 18:53 without a field goal, but by that time Delaware had extended its lead to 58-33.
Delaware, which entered the week ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division I in scoring defense at 51.7 points per game, held its third opponent this season under 40 points and its eighth foe under 50 points. The win was Delaware’s biggest since a 78-34 victory over Pennsylvania back on Nov. 30 and its most lopsided in league play since a 78-47 win over Hofstra Jan. 15, 2005.
