NEWARK, DE -- Tyresa Smith (at right) and Kyle DeHaven stole the show for the University of Delaware as the Blue Hens ran to their seventh straight victory with a 79-59 non-league women’s basketball win over Boston University Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Smith led the Blue Hens with 24 points and 13 rebounds and became Delaware’s all-time career leader in steals and DeHaven came off the bench to record a school-record nine steals as the Blue Hens (8-1) continued their winning ways.
Boston University (5-4), which had a two-game win streak snapped, got 24 points and six three-pointers from guard Katie Meinhardt while Erica Kovach added 12 points and Aly Hinton added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Terriers, who defeated Delaware 61-59 last year in Boston, hurt themselves by committing 29 turnovers for the game and shooting just 31 percent from the field (9 of 29) in the second half.
Melissa Czorniewy scored 15 points, Chrissy Fisher added 14 points and six rebounds, Courtney Irving added 10 points and pulled six rebounds, and Alena Koshansky chipped in with seven assists and six steals for the Blue Hens, who recorded 23 steals for the game, one shy of the school record set earlier this season.
The Hens defeated Boston University for the 14th time in the last 16 meetings and extended their regular season home winning streak against non-league opponents to 16 games since the 2003-04 season.
Smith, who also recorded two steals and two blocked shots, registered her fifth 20-point scoring effort of the season and the 11th of her career. Her second half steal gave her 278 for her career, breaking the mark of 277 by Lisa Cano in 1984-88. DeHaven, a first-year transfer from William & Mary, broke the school record for steals in a game with nine, surpassing the mark of eight set seven other times, most recently by Smith twice during the 2004-05 season.
Delaware, which has earned votes in the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches Top 25 polls the last two weeks, started slow vs. Boston University as the Terriers led for much of the opening half, taking their biggest lead at 22-16 with 10:32 left on a layup by Christine Kinneary.
Boston University still led 27-26 with 6:49 left, but Delaware closed the half on a 15-6 run, taking the lead for good on a layup by Smith with 6:09 left. After BU’s Kovach nailed a three-pointer with 3:24 left to cut the margin to 34-33, the Hens reeled off the final seven points of the half to take control.
The Hens upped the lead quickly in the second half, outscoring BU 16-3 over the first six minutes of the stanza to go up 57-36 with 13:40 remaining. The Terriers missed their first six shots of the second half to fall behind as Smith scored six points and Czorniewy four during the pivotal UD run. Delaware led by at least 20 points for most of the final 10 minutes, going up by as much as 26 points at 71-45 with 4:40 left on a free throw by Irving.
