NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware sprinted out to a 16-0 lead and held Northeastern scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game on the way to a wire-to-wire 65-43 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

League leading Delaware, which has earned votes in both national top 25 polls the last six weeks, continued its winning ways as the Blue Hens (13-2, 4-0 CAA) won their third straight game and their 12th in the last 13 outings.

It was a balanced effort all around for Delaware, which got a game-high 12 points from guard Melissa Czorniewy (at right) while Kyle DeHaven came off the bench to add 10 points, Farrah Ferguson had eight points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots, and Chrissy Fisher contributed eight points and six rebounds. All 12 Delaware players saw action with 11 scoring at least two points and 11 pulling at least one rebound.

Delaware, which won its eighth straight home game and its 19th in the last 20 at the BCC, shot 48.3 percent from the field for the game (28 of 58), held a 34-30 advantage on the boards, and forced 25 turnovers.

Northeastern (2-13, 1-3 CAA), which dressed just seven players due to injuries, got 11 points from Kim Carr while Shaleyse Smallwood added nine points and Ashlee Feldman and Lucia Pablos each contributed eight. The Huskies, who lost to Delaware for the ninth straight time, have now lost three of their last four games and fell to 1-7 on the road this season. Northeastern hit just 33 percent of its shots from the field (14 of 42) for the game and were just 4 of 20 in the opening half.

The Blue Hens left little doubt of the outcome as they jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first nine minutes, hitting eight of their first 14 shots from the field and forcing eight turnovers during the stretch. Northeastern missed its first nine shots from the field before finally getting on the board with 10:27 left in the opening half on a three-pointer by Pablos. The Hens led by as much as 25 points before heading into the lockerroom up 35-12.

Delaware cruised through the second half to pick up the win as the Hens led by at least 21 points the entire way and went up by as much as 35 points at 61-26 when Kristina Gineitis drained a three-pointer with 4:38 left.

The Hens, coming off a 66-38 win over UNC Wilmington Sunday, were trying to hold consecutive opponents to under 40 points for the first time since the 1981-82 season, but Northeastern made things respectable by outscoring Delaware 17-4 the rest of the way.
