NEWARK, DE -- Boston College freshman forward Stefanie Murphy scored 26 points and pulled 16 rebounds, but it was her rebound and put back just before the final buzzer that was most important as the Eagles stunned the University of Delaware for a 53-51 women’s basketball victory Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (1-3), who dropped their third straight game following a season-opening win over Delaware State Nov. 9, had a 15-game regular season non-league winning streak snapped. The Hens had not lost to a non-league opponent during the regular season at the BCC since an 80-78 setback to Richmond on Nov. 21, 2003.
Delaware senior guard Kyle DeHaven, who scored a team-high 11 points and dished out five assists in her first game back after breaking her hand in the opener, tied the game at 51-51 with 12 seconds left when she calmly sank two free throws after being fouled after her steal of an inbounds pass seconds earlier.
Following a timeout, Boston College’s Ayla Brown took a three-pointer from the left corner with two seconds left. The shot went long but Murphy was there to get the rebound and laid the ball back in just before the buzzer sounded for the game-winner.
The officials looked over the replay for approximately five minutes before putting .1 seconds back on the clock. Jamie Mundy’s long inbounds pass was intercepted by BC 6-6 center Carolyn Swords to end the game.
Courtney Irving added a season-high 10 points and sophomore Corinthia Benison (at right) collected a career-high nine points off the bench but the Hens shot just 26.7 percent from the field (14 of 54), the team’s third straight sub 27 percent shooting performance. Delaware connected on just one field goal over the final 10:44, but did hit 12 of its final 14 free throws to stay in the game.
The Hens, who are now 0-16 all-time vs. Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, committed just 12 turnovers, but were outrebounded by a 49-33 margin.
Murphy, a freshman playing in just her third career game, came off the bench to spark the Eagles (2-1). She hit on 13 of 21 shots from the field and pulled 16 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive end. Corey Rusin was the only other BC player in double figures as she came off the bench to contribute 10 points.
The Eagles starters combined to score just 12 points. Boston College shot 24 of 50 from the field but was hampered by 19 turnovers and 5 of 21 shooting from the foul line.
“They are so big and we didn’t box out,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose young team has lost three straight for the first time since the 2003-04 season. “We did everything else we needed to do to win the game. We gave ourselves a chance to win vs. an ACC team and all we had to do was rebound. That is our biggest problem right now.”
Delaware led for most of the first half before Boston College tied the game at 19-19 with 5:45 left on a layup by Murphy and built the lead to four at 25-21 on a jumper by Victoria Jones with 2:43 left. Two free throws by Benison cut the BC lead to 25-23 at the break.
The Eagles outscored the Blue Hens 10-3 to open the second half and took their biggest lead of the contest at 35-26 on a layup by Murphy four minutes into the stanza. Boston College led the rest of the way until the final seconds. Delaware fought back from a 49-44 deficit with 3:57 left as Benison nailed a three-pointer and DeHaven hit four straight free throws, including the two that tied the game with 12 seconds left.
Delaware will continue action this weekend at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Tournament in Chattanooga. Delaware will take on Louisville on Friday at 5 p.m. Host UTC will take on Murray State in the other first round game. The consolation and finals are set for Saturday.
