HARRISONBURG, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore guard Tesia Harris (at right) was named to third team All-Colonial Athletic Association at the CAA Women’s Basketball Awards Banquet at the Grand Ballroom, Festival Conference Center Wednesday night.
Harris, a sophomore from Dix Hills, N.Y. (Half Hollow Hills HS), finished the regular season ranked seventh in the CAA in scoring at 13.8 ppg, seventh in free-throw percentage (.762), sixth in three-point field goals made (a Delaware season record of 51, 1.8 per game), 10th in minutes played (32.3 per game), and tied for 15th in blocked shots with 21.
She scored in double figures 20 times including five games of over 20 points. Against Towson, she set a career-high at home with 27 points and then bettered that performance in the next meeting with 29 against the Tigers. She ranks second among active players on the team in rebounding at 5.2 rpg, second in blocked shots, and third in steals with 41.
Delaware (15-14) is the No. 9 seed in the CAA Tournament being held this weekend at the James Madison Convocation Center. The Blue Hens will take on No. 8 seed Towson (16-12) in a first round game Thursday, Mar. 12 at 12 noon.
The winner of that game will face top-seeded Drexel on Friday in the quarterfinals at 12 noon. The tournament continues through Sunday with the champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Headlining the All-CAA teams as Player of the Year was the pre-season favorite - Drexel’s Gabriela Marginean. She was joined on the first team by Towson’s Shanae Baker-Brice, JMU’s Dawn Evans, Old Dominion’s Tiffany Green, and VCU’s Quanitra Hollingsworth.
The second team consisted of Tiffany Benson (William & Mary), Brittany Blackwell (UNC Wilmington), Jessica Canady (ODU), Jasmine Crew (Northeastern) and Jess Fuller (Hofstra). Benson also took home CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Joining Harris on the third team were Radoslava Bachvarova of VCU, Greta Luksyte of UNCW, Jasmina Rosseel of Drexel, and Katrina Wheeler of Towson.
Making up the All-Rookie Team were (Rookie of the Year) Joelle Connelly and Nicole Capurso of Hofstra, Crystal Johnson and Jylisa Williams of Georgia State, Northeastern’s Brittany Wilson and William & Mary's Tasha Pye. Connelly earned CAA Rookie of the Year honors.
Benson was joined on the CAA All-Defensive Team by Baker-Brice, Hollingsworth, Brittany Hollins and Jess Fuller.
The Dean Ehlers Award recipients for community service, academic accomplishments, and leadership were Jen Nuzzo (Old Dominion) and Andrea Peterson (Drexel).
Denise Dillon, who led Drexel to its first ever CAA regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, was named Coach of the Year. She has led Drexel to a record of 21-8, including a mark of 16-2 in league play.
