BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tesia Harris (at right) continued her offensive onslaught this season scoring a season-high 19 points, but it was not enough as Delaware (2-1) fell to the Mid-American Conference’s Buffalo, 63-45 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
Delaware did not have an answer for the Bulls’ Kourtney Brown, who led all scorers with 22 points on 11 of 14 shooting. Led by Brown, the Bulls dominated Delaware inside, scoring 32 points in the paint to Delaware’s 14. The Bulls also took advantage of Delaware’s 24 turnovers by converting them into 28 points.
Delaware’s bench, which played a key part in the first two games this season (both wins), was very quiet on the day, contributing just six points on the day, including four by freshman guard Jocelyn Bailey.
Buffalo shot 50 percent from the field as Delaware struggled, shooting a season-low 28.6 percent for the game, and just 20 percent (7-35) in the first half. The Hens also shot a season-low 66.7 percent from the free-throw line making eight of 12.
The Blue Hens led by as much as three points when sophomore guard Vanessa Kabongo’s jumper put Delaware up 7-4 almost five minutes into the game. That would be the last Delaware lead on the day, because after Kabongo’s shot, Buffalo went on a 28-12 run to end the half, punctuated by a Brown basket with one second on the clock.
After an impressive win on Wednesday night, Head Coach Tina Martin said the Blue Hens regressed back to 2007-08 at times during today’s game at Buffalo.
“A lot of our young players pressed, and we did a lot of the things we did last year,” Martin said, referring to her 7-24 team from a year ago. “Overall, it was not a good performance offensively, and unfortunately, that translated into a poor performance on defense. We have no heroes on this team, so we have to play together to win.”
Corinthia Benison had another solid outing for the Hens in the loss. A sophomore guard, Benison is emerging as a leader on a team that has not had captains named to this point. She posted seven points, three assists and four steals in her 30 minutes of action. She also became the first Blue Hen other than Harris to make a three-point field goal as she converted on 2-4 from behind the arc.
Martin said she hopes she can rally her young team for its third straight road game on Tuesday night in Hamden, Conn. against Quinnipiac - a team the Hens lost to last season. According to Martin, the fact that there’s little time in between this game and the next is a good thing.
“There’s no time to mope, and hopefully these kids won’t get into a funk, because we’ve got a game right away,” Martin explained. “We’ll get back in the gym, we’ll work on it, and hopefully we’ll see better results against Qunnipiac on Tuesday.”
