RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman women’s basketball player Elena Delle Donne has been selected as a Co-Rookie of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association after leading the Blue Hens to a 3-0 week.
Delle Donne (at right), a forward/guard, was the Hens’ top scorer in every contest, leading the team with 23.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per outing. Delle Donne’s highlight of the week was against Maine, when she hit a trey with 45 seconds lingering on the clock to tie the game, before recording a jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining to notch the victory. The rookie’s heroics led UD to defeat Maine, 52-50, on the road and open at home with a pair of victories at the Bob Carpenter Center over Navy, 67-50, and La Salle, 54-46.
Delle Donne shot 26-for-53 (.491) from the floor, 7-for-15 (.467) from three-point range and 10-of-12 (.833) from the free throw line amidst the trio of contests. The 6-5 rookie also added eight assists, three blocks and two steals on the week.
The Naismith national player of the year candidate currently ranks seventh in the NCAA Division I women’s basketball rankings with 23.4 points per game, and stands in the national top-100 in free-throw percentage (34th, 89.2%), three-point field goal percentage (38th, 45.5%), rebounds per game (77th, 8.7 rpg), field goal percentage (79th, 49.6%), and blocked shots (85th, 1.6 bpg).
Delle Donne has helped UD to rank atop the conference in three-point field goal percentage, as the Hens have connected on 41 of 111 from beyond the arc, good for 36.9 percent accuracy. Delle Donne alone ranks among the individual leaders in defensive rebounds (1st, 6.7 rpg), minutes played (1st, 37.1 mpg), scoring (2nd, 23.4 ppg), free throw percentage (2nd, 89.2%), three-point field goal percentage (2nd, 45.5%), rebounding (3rd, 8.7 rpg), blocked shots (4th, 1.6 bpg), assist/turnover ratio (5th, 1.4 ratio), three-point field goals made (5th, 2.1 3-pg), field goal percentage (9th, 49.6%), and assists (10th, 3.3 apg).
Towson’s Shanae Baker-Brice and Brittany Wilson of Northeastern were named Co-Players of the Week, while Delle Donne was joined by Hofstra’s Shante Evans as a CAA Co-Rookie of the Week selection.
Following a stretch of four games played over eight days, the Hens take a eight-day sabbatical from game-day duties. Delaware will next host Buffalo at 6 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
