RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman women’s basketball sensation Elena Delle Donne has been selected as the Rookie of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association after leading the Blue Hens last week as UD went 1-1 in conference play.

Delle Donne (at right), a forward/guard Naismith National Player of the Year and Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 candidate, tallied her seventh double-double of the season on Thursday in her 29-point, 10-rebound performance against UNC Wilmington before playing all 50 minutes in Sunday’s double-overtime loss to Drexel at the Bob Carpenter Center.

In both outings, she poured in game high points, including her 27-point performance against Drexel. Delle Donne finished the week averaging 28.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. She shot 48.6 percent (17-of-35) from the floor, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from deep, and 100 percent (15-of-15) from the line. The rookie also added three steals, six assists and nine blocks in the two outings.

Delle Donne currently ranks third in the nation in scoring, 10th in free-throw percentage, 27th in double-doubles, 33rd in three-point field goal percentage, 41st in rebounds per game, 51st in blocked shots per game, and 54th in field goal percentage. The 6-5 rookies also leads the nation having scored 39.3 percent of her teams’ points in games in which she has played. She has scored 352 of the Hens’ 896 points scored in her 14 active games.

Delle Donne is one of only two players in the nation to rank in the top 100 in each of the three shooting percentages: field goals (54th), three-pointers (33rd) and free throws (10th).

Delle Donne alone ranks among the individual leaders in the league in rebounding (1st, 9.4 rpg), defensive rebounds (1st, 6.6 rpg), minutes played (1st, 38.6 mpg), scoring (2nd, 25.1 ppg), free throw percentage (2nd, 90.3%), blocked shots (2nd, 1.9 bpg), three-point field goal percentage (2nd, 42.7%), three-point field goals made (3rd, 2.3 3-pg), field goal percentage (5th, 50.2%), and offensive rebounds (10th, 2.9 rpg).

Drexel’s Gabriela Marginean was named the CAA’s Player of the Week after leading the Dragons to a 2-0 week.

The Hens next travel to Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, Jan. 21 for a 7 p.m. contest. VCU is undefeated in conference play to lead the CAA at 5-0.
