RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman women’s basketball sensation Elena Delle Donne has been selected as the Rookie of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association for the eighth time this season after leading the Blue Hens to a 1-1 week. Delle Donne (at right), who now leads the nation in scoring with 25.8 points per game, has also twice been named the CAA Player of the Week.
Delle Donne, a forward/guard Naismith National Player of the Year and Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 candidate, helped the Blue Hens to a 1-1 record on the week. She averaged 28.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing for Delaware. The rookie collected her 10th double-double against Old Dominion with 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five blocks. Delle Donne then scored 35 points, pulled down seven rebounds and added a game-high six blocks in the win over Georgia State. The freshman forward/guard shot 53.7 percent from the floor, 40 percent from long range and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe. She finished the week with 11 blocked shots, two steals and one assist.
In addition to leading the nation in scoring, Delle Donne currently ranks fourth in free-throw percentage, 25th in three-point field goal percentage, 29th in double-doubles, 34th in blocked shots per game, 45th in field goal percentage, 54th in rebounds per game, and 91st in three-point field goals per game. The Wilmington, Del. native also leads the nation having scored 39.8 percent of her teams’ points in games in which she has played. She has scored 568 of the Hens’ 1,427 points scored in her 22 active games.
Delle Donne stands as the only player in the nation to rank in the top 50 in each of the three shooting percentages: field goals (45th), three-pointers (25th) and free throws (4th).
Delle Donne ranks among the individual leaders in the league in scoring (1st, 25.8 ppg), rebounding (1st, 9.0 rpg), free throw percentage (1st, 91.2%), defensive rebounds (1st, 6.2 rpg), minutes played (2nd, 37.7 mpg), blocked shots (2nd, 2.0 bpg), three-point field goal percentage (2nd, 42.9%), field goal percentage (3rd, 50.8%), three-point field goals made (2nd, 2.2 3-pg), and offensive rebounds (8th, 2.8 rpg).
Drexel’s Gabriela Marginean was named Player of the Week after guiding the Dragons to a 2-0 week.
The Hens next travel to James Madison for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, Feb. 18.
