Blue Hens Win Novice Heavyweight Eight Race; Advance to Finals in Three Races


PHILADELPHIA &endash;The University of Delaware women’s rowing team captured the Novice Heavyweight Eight race and advanced to the finals in three of five races to highlight action at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

The Blue Hens placed tied for second in the overall team standings with Villanova. Massachusetts won the team title while Central Florida placed fourth.

Delaware’s Novice Heavyweight Eight team of Dana Hammond, Jessica Colpo, Jenni Buckley, Lissa Kutz, Lauren Heller, Betsy Ferry, Vikki Humenik, Lisa Hardy, and Katey Prosser rowed to a time of 6:48.8 to capture the gold medal and earn the Sarah Vaughn Trophy. Central Florida was second (7:01.0) followed by Massachusetts (7:05.7).

Also advancing to the finals for the Blue Hens was the Varsity Lightweight Eight team of Jenn O’Keefe, Danielle Stevens, Nicole Belsole, Denise Burke, Susan Krause, Laurie Patria, Tory Yanakos, Nicole Ferrari, and Whitney McCormick which placed second behind champion Massachusetts; and the Junior Varsity Heavyweight Eight team of Anna Christopher, Amy Servidea, Ashley Connell, Maggie Bartholomew, Jen Suminski, Robin Kraft, Logan Thompson, Mckenzie Jones, and Marybeth Engel which placed sixth in 7:22.2. Purdue won the race in a time of 6:53.2 followed by Rochester Institute of Technology.

Also for the Blue Hens, the Novice Four team placed sixth in its heat with a time of 8:23.4 but was eliminated in the first round and the Varsity Heavyweight Eight team raced to a time of 7:21.5 but was eliminated in the second round.

The Novice Four team included Allison Haug, Krista Volikas, Bridge Fairchild, Karina McBride, and Lindsay Morris while the Varsity Heavyweight Eight team included Emily Bercaw, Amanda Duley, Gail Orem, Gayle Dornan, Karen Hommer, Jessica Ayres, Courtney Levering, Bizzy Schultz, and Heather Bieler.
