Blue Hen Rowers Claim Three Firsts, One Fourth in Solid Showing

OCCOQUAN, VA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team captured three first place finishes and one fourth place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Championships Sunday on the Occoquan River.

The Blue Hens, coached by Amanda Kukla, won the Varsity Lightweight Eight, Novice Heavyweight Eight, and Junior Varsity Eight races and placed fourth in the Varsity Heavyweight Eight race.

The Hens won the Varsity Lightweight Eight race in a time of 7:03.6 to outdistance runner-up William & Mary at 7:11.3 and third place finisher Mary Washington (7:19.6). Delaware's team was made up of Jenn O'Keefe, Danielle Stevens, Nicole Belsole, Denise Burke, Susan Krause, Laurie Patria, Tory Yanakos, Nicole Ferrari, and Whitney McCormick.

Delaware captured the Novice Heavyweight Eight race in a time of 7:06.0, 14 seconds better than William & Mary at 7:20.3. Pittsburgh was third in 7:20.6. Delaware's team included Dana Hammond, Jessica Colpo, Jenni Buckley, Lissa Kutz, Lauren Heller, Betsy Ferry, Vikki Humenik, Lisa Hardy, and Katey Prosser.

The Hens took their third gold medal of the day as the Junior Varsity Eight team of Anna Christopher, Amy Servidea, Ashley Connell, Maggie Bartholomew, Jen Suminski, Robin Kraft, Logan Thompson, Mckenzie Jones, and Marybeth Engel won in a time of 7:15.6 ahead of Drexel and Johns Hopkins.

Delaware placed fourth in the Varsity Heavyweight Eight as the team of Emily Bercaw, Amanda Duley, Gail Orem, Gayle Dornan, Karen Hommer, Jessica Ayers, Courtney Levering, Bizzy Schultz, and Heather Bieler rowed to a time of 6:58.5. Drexel won the race in 6:49.8 followed by Johns Hopkins (6:53.4) and William & Mary (6:54.5).

Delaware will compete at the Dad Vail Regatta this weekend on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
