Blue Hens Win Lightweight Eights, Capture First Ever Team Title

 

Dana Hammond Was a Part of the Winning Lightweight Eights team

PHILADELPHIA -- In just its third season as a varsity team, the University of Delaware women's rowing team posted its most impressive milestone in school history by winning the women's team title at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

The Blue Hens captured the Lightweight Varsity Eights competition and placed in the top five in four other events to capture the team title, besting over 115 other schools for the title. Delaware, led by head coach Amanda Kukla, placed third in the standings in its first varsity season in 1999 and tied for second place last season.

Delaware captured the Lightweight Varsity Eights competition as the team of Dana Hammond, Lisa Hardy, Jen Buckley, Susan Krause, Gail Orem, Denise Burke, Tory Yanakos, Whitney McCormick, and Fay Schmid rowed to a time of 7:20.2 to outlast Marist (7:28.0) and Carnegie Mellon (7:29.0).

The Hens also placed second in the Novice Heavyweight Eights, third in both the Junior Varsity Eights and Heavyweight Eights, and fifth in the Novice Fours.

The Novice Heavyweight Eights team of Alli Garwood, Laura Muto, Kylie Campbell, Elizabeth Harris, Alison Conway, Elizabeth McInturff, Dawn Hussnatter, Leanna Ferrand, and Erin Quimby rowed to a time of 7:10.7 to placed second behind Lehigh (7:02.3).

The Junior Varsity Eights team of Lauren Baker, Jess Ayers, Elizabeth McGarry, Laura McDonald, Maggie Bartholomew, Bizzy Schultz, Kara Sylvis, Nicole Ferrari, and Logan Thompson was third with a time of 7:26.6, placing behind winner Central Florida (7:16.3) and runner-up Boston College (7:17.1).

The Heavyweight Varsity Eights squad of Sarah Rusk, Jess Colpo, Lauren Heller, Betsy Ferry, Jen Suminski, Lissa Kutz, Karen Hommer, Gayle Dornan, and Amanda Duley placed third in the Petite Final behind winner Connecticut (7:33.6) and runner-up Worcester Polytech (7:38.8). Boston College captured the Grand Final in the event.

The Novice Fours team of Kat Ahern, Erin O'Leary, Erinn Batykefer, Janice Brown, and Kate McCullough placed fifth in a time of 8:29.4. Bowdoin took first place with a time of 8:11.6.
