CAMDEN, NJ -- The University of
Delaware women's rowing team opened the 2001 season by
competing in six races at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River
Saturday afternoon.
Delaware placed in the top six in all six
events, including capturing the Freshman Novice Four race,
edging the University of Connecticut to take first place.
The team consisted of Kat Ahern, Erin O'Leary, Erinn
Batykefer, Janice Brown, and Kate
McCullough.
The Blue Hens also picked up third place
finishes in the Varsity Eight #1 race as the team of
Sarah Rusk, Jess Colpo, Lauren Heller, Betsy Ferry, Jen
Suminski, Lissa Kutz, Karen Hommer, Gayle Dornan, and
Amanda Duley raced to a time of 7:16.11 and the
Varsity Eight #2 team of Lauren Baker, Gail Orem, Jess
Ayers, Maggie Bartholomew, Bizzy Schultz, Elizabeth McGarry,
Laura McDonald, Logan Thompson, and Nicole
Ferrari finished with a time of 7:38.01. Delaware placed
behind champion Navy in each of the races.
Delaware also picked up a pair of fourth
place finishes as the Lightweight Eight unit of Dana
Hammond, Lisa Hardy, Jen Buckley, Susan Krause, Tory
Yanakos, Denise Burke, Fay Schmid, Whitney McCormick,
and Dana Lohr finished behind champion Princeton,
Wisconsin, and Radcliffe in a time of 7:28.13 and the Hens
team of Melissa Shields, Andrea Placke, Liz Florin,
Michelle Whalen, Danah O'Connor, Janet Hoyler, Kara Sylvis,
Stef Lazorick, and Dawnyel Boucek rowed to a time
of 7:55.03 in the Freshman Novice Eight #2 race won by Navy.
The Hens also placed sixth in the
Freshman Novice Eight #1 race in a time of 7:59.85. The team
consisted of Alli Garwood, Laura Muto, Kylie Campbell,
Elizabeth Harris, Alison Conway, Elizabeth McInturff, Dawn
Hussnatter, Leanna Ferrand, and Erin Quimby.
Lehigh won the event with a time of 7:22.45.
In all, 43 collegiate teams competed in
the event.
