 Blue Hen Rowers Win Delaware's First Ever CAA Team Title

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team swept all four scoring races on the way to claiming the team title at the first ever Colonial Athletic Association championships Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River.

Delaware finished with 60 points to claim the first CAA title ever for the Blue Hens in any sport in their first season as members of the league. Host Drexel was second with 31 points followed by George Mason (30), and Old Dominion (12). The meet was held as part of the 36th annual Kerr Cup Regatta.

The Blue Hens captured the Varsity Heavyweight Eights race in a time of 6:48.6, the Second Varsity Eights race in a time of 7:00.1, the Novice Eights (7:10.2), and the Varsity Fours (8:03.0). Delaware teams also placed second in the Second Eights (7:12.0) and in the Varsity Fours (8:25.8).

Delaware's Varsity Heavyweight Eights team of Alli Garwood, Lauren Heller, Elizabeth McInturff, Lissa Kutz, Dawn Hussnatter, Betsy Ferry, Kylie Campbell, Laura McDonald, and Erin Quimby rowed to a winning time of 6:48.6 to outdistance George Mason (6:56.5), Drexel (6:59.5), and Old Dominion (7:31.4).

The Second Eights team of Dana Hammond, Susan Krause, Fay Schmid, Denise Burke, Emily McElwain, Nicole Ferrari, Tory Yanakos, Stef Lazorick, and Dana Lohr won its race in 7:00.1, downing Delaware's B team of Carolyn Serey, Jessica Colpo, Erinn Batykefer, Jessica Ayers, Jen Suminski, Leanna Ferrand, Danah O'Connor, Janice Brown, and Alison Conway (7:12.0). Drexel was third in a time of 7:20.0.

The Blue Hen Novice Eights team of Stacey Atsaides, Emily McElwain, Kathleen Servis, Lauren Fretz, Hannah Evans, Stefanie Schneider, Meredith Bullamore, Courtney Bull, and Maureen Gillen won its race in a time of 7:10.2 to outdistance runner-up George Mason (7:27.2).

In the Varsity Fours race, Delaware took first and second place. The Blue Hen team of Kat Campagnini, Andrea Placke, Elizabeth McGarry, Elizabeth Harris, and Lyra Sawzin won in a time of 8:03.0 while the Delaware "B" team of Alexis Klair, Nicole Ferrari, Liz Florin, Lindsay Greco, and Susan Carbine was second in a time of 8:25.8.

Delaware will continue action May 10-11 at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
