CHERRY HILL, NJ -- The University
of Delaware Lightweight Varsity Eights team closed out the
2002 season for the Blue Hen women's rowing team by winning
the consolation final race and placing seventh overall at
the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships
Saturday on the Cooper River.
Delaware's team of Dana Hammond,
Denise Burke, Fay Schmid, Laura Muto, Emily McElwain, Susan
Krause, Tory Yanakos, Stefanie Lazorick, and Lyra
Sawzin rowed to a time of 6:47.7 to win the consolation
final and earn a seventh place finish for the second
straight year.
The national meet features the top
Lightweight Varsity Eights teams in the nation. The NCAA
championships, which will be held next week in Indianapolis,
IN, includes only Heavyweight teams.
Hammond, Krause, and Burke were all
members of last year's team that also placed seventh at the
IRA Championships.
Princeton won the national title by
winning the finals race with a time of 6:26.5. Wisconsin was
second followed by Radcliffe, Mercyhurst, Stanford, and the
University of California-Santa Barbara.
Delaware won the consolation finals race
with a time of 6:47.7, finishing ahead of Villanova
(6:49.9), Georgetown (6:59.1), and Rhode Island
(7:03.5).
The championships marked the final
competition of the 2001-2002 season for all University of
Delaware athletics teams.
