 Blue Hens Capture Lightweight Varsity Fours

OAK RIDGE, TN -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team won the Varsity Lightweight Eights race and finished in the top five in four other races at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships Sunday at Melton Hill Lake.

The Blue Hen Lightweight Varsity Eights team of Dana Hammond, Laura Muto, Lisa Hardy, Susan Krause, Fay Schmid, Denise Burke, Tory Yanakos, Stef Lazorick, and Dana Lohr won its race with a time of 7:15.7, besting runner-up Central Florida (7:33.8) and third place finisher Georgia Tech (7:40.1).

The Hens put together three fourth place finishes as the Varsity Lightweight Fours, Novice Eights, and Junior Varsity Eights. The Delaware Varsity Fours placed fifth while the Varsity Heavyweight Eights placed sixth.

The Varsity Lightweight Fours team of Alexis Klair, Nicole Ferrari, Liz Florin, Lindsay Greco, and Susan Carbine was fourth in the grand finals with a time of 8:34.9. Marietta won the race in 8:23.4, Savannah College of Art and Design was second (8:23.9), and Tennessee-Chattanooga was third (8:30.7).

The Novice Eights team of Stacey Atsaides, Emily McElwain, Kathleen Servis, Lauren Fretz, Hannah Evans, Stefanie Schneider, Meredith Bullamore, Courtney Bull, and Maureen Gillen was fourth out of 26 teams in a time of 7:18.0. Purdue won the race in 7:10.3 followed by Central Florida (7:13.5), and Tennessee (7:17.0).

The Junior Varsity Eights team of Carolyn Serey, Jessica Colpo, Erinn Batykefer, Jessica Ayers, Jen Suminski, Leanna Ferrand, Danah O'Connor, Janice Brown, and Alison Conway placed fourth out of 11 teams with a time of 7:18.4. Cincinnati won the race in a time of 7:02.6 followed by Tennessee (7:05.3), and Miami (7:15.6).

Also for the Hens, the Varsity Fours team of Kat Campagnini, Andrea Placke, Elizabeth McGarry, Elizabeth Harris, and Lyra Sawzin placed fifth out of 19 teams in a time of 8:09.5. Marietta won the race in 7:53.7 followed by Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Wake Forest.

The Blue Hen Varsity Eights team of Alli Garwood, Lauren Heller, Elizabeth McInturff, Lissa Kutz, Dawn Hussnatter, Betsy Ferry, Kylie Campbell, Laura McDonald, and Erin Quimby placed sixth out of 23 teams with a time of 7:27.3. Tennessee won the race in 7:08.2 followed by Cincinnati, Tulsa, Miami, and Louisville.

Delaware will continue action next Saturday at the Kerr Cup and Colonial Athletic Association Championships on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
