Colonial Athletic Association Championships/Kerr Cup Regatta

Blue Hens Win Three Races; Captured Third Straight CAA Team Title

 

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing squad captured three of the four races to capture the team title and claim its third straight unofficial Colonial Athletic Association title at the 38th annual Kerr Cup Regatta hosted by Drexel University Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

The Hens, led by first-year head coach Laura Slice, won the Varsity Fours, Novice Eights, and Second Eights races and placed second in the Varsity Eights competitions to edge Drexel for the team title. George Mason was third and Old Dominion placed fourth in the team standings. The CAA title is an unofficial title as only four teams sponsor the sport and compete in the championships.

Delaware's Varsity Fours team of Jill Goldman, Jaime Schoenewald, Susan Carbine, Stephanie Miller, and Cathy Savarese rowed to a winning time of 8:16.6 to down Old Dominion (7:09.31).

The Blue Hen Novice Eights team won with a time of 6:53.2, edging George Mason (7:09.71), and Drexel (7:10.27). Delaware's team consisted of Alison Harrington, Rachel Thomas, Nicky Bradley, Elizabeth Martin, Lisa Karwoski, Betsy Seeger, Laura Beaufort, Maria Bellumori, and Nikki Jackowsky. Delaware's Second Novice Eights team of Kenna Plangemann, Jenn Boutin, Lynn Hamski, Katie Broullire, Stacey Walczak, Laura Belfi, Lindsey Wood, Christina Stanley, and Brie Sheppard also competed in the race.

Delaware won its third race of the day in the Second Varsity Eights as the team of Kat Campagnini, Lyra Sawzin, Emily McElwain, Elizabeth Harris, Melanie Turner, Janice Brown, Dawn'yel Boucek, Laura Muto, and Jess Kostick posted a winning time of 6:53.8. Drexel was second in 7:04.97 and George Mason was third in 7:10.16.

Drexel won the Varsity Eights race with a time of 6:38.0 to edge Delaware (6:41.8) and George Mason (6:47.55). Delaware's team consisted of Carolyn Serey, Maureen Gillen, Elizabeth McGarry, Leanna Ferrand, Elizabeth McInturff, Andrea Placke, Dawn Hussnatter, Laura McDonald, and Lane Kohl.

Drexel University Alumni established the Kerr Cup Regatta in 1967 in honor of former Drexel Crew Coach Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr served Drexel not only as a coach, but also as the team physician and surgeon. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. This year's Kerr Cup Regatta, Dr. Kerr's wife, Lela H. Kerr, was there to present the awards to the winning boats. Mrs. Kerr was accompanied by her son, daughter, granddaughter and great-grandson.

The Blue Hens will continue their season May 9 at the ECAC Championships at Lake Quinsigmon, Worcester, MA.
