Regine Adrien Earns Delaware Women's Rowing Sportsmanship Award

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware athletics department has announced the winners of the Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Now in its fourth year, the Blue Hen Sportsmanship program honors those student-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents, and game officials. The winners, who receive a certificate noting their award at the season-ending athletics banquet, are selected by the coaching staffs of each sport.

The student-athletes will be formally honored as the annual UD Men’s and Women’s Intercollegiate Awards Banquets that will be held on Thursday, May 17.

This year’s recipients are: Regine Adrien (women’s rowing - at right), Adam Blomberg (men’s swimming and diving), Tim Brock (men’s cross country), Michael Bratus (men’s soccer), Tommy Ellison (golf), Kristine Gneiss (volleyball), Matt Guida (men’s indoor track and field), Bryan Hagerich (baseball), Liz Harvin (women’s outdoor track and field), Laura Heenan (women’s indoor track and field), Kaili Kao (field hockey), Alena Koshansky (women’s basketball), Meredith Law (women’s swimming and diving), Bonnie Mills (women’s soccer), Kristen Mueller (women’s tennis), Henry Olawoye (men’s basketball), Camilo Perez (men’s tennis), George Potts (football), Tommy Scherr (men’s lacrosse), Kyle Schmid (men’s outdoor track & field), Debbie Sloan (women’s lacrosse), Carolynn Sloat (softball), and Leslie Wason (women’s cross country).

Gneiss, Heenan, Scherr, and Sloat were honored for the second straight year.

"We are once again proud to honor these individuals for their efforts in showing true sportsmanship throughout the year," said University of Delaware Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson. "These special student-athletes have shown that you can be an outstanding competitor on the field and still accomplish your goals with great character and sportsmanship while showing respect to your opponents and officials."

Adrien, a freshman from Merrick, NY (Kellenberg Memorial High School), led the women’s rowing team to a second place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association championships and was a member of the CAA champion Novice Eights team; Blomberg, a junior from Kennewick, WA (Kamiakin HS), owns three school records and was named this year’s CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s swimming; Brock, a senior from Newark, DE (Newark HS), competed in five meets this past season and was 71st at the CAA championships; Bratus, a senior from Metuchan, NJ (St. Benedict's HS), played in 13 games with five starts this season and dished out two assists; and Ellison, a sophomore from Bethany Beach, DE (Worcester Prep, MD), had a 76.08 stroke average this season and was sixth at the Fairfield Invitational.

Gneiss, a senior middle hitter and co-captain from Floral Park, NY (Floral Park Memorial HS), recorded six kills and 10 blocks in a backup role this season for the CAA semifinalists; Guida, a senior pole vaulter from Succasunna, NJ (Roxbury HS), won his event at two meets during the indoor season; Hagerich, a senior outfielder and co-captain from Somerset, PA (Somerset HS), has led the Blue Hens into next week’s CAA Tournament and leads the team with home runs this season; Harvin, a freshman sprinter from Southfield, MI (Southfield Lathrup HS), placed fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay at this spring’s CAA Outdoor Championships; and Heenan, a senior from Cherry Hill, NJ (Cherry Hill West HS), won the 4 x 800 meter relay at two meets during the season.

Kao, a senior co-captain from State College, PA (State College HS), is a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Team member; Koshansky, a senior guard and co-captain from Fairfax, VA (Chantilly HS), led the UD women’s basketball team to a 26-6 record and an NCAA Tournament berth as she averaged 7.3 points per game and dished out a team-high 106 assists; Law, a senior co-captain from Chesapeake, VA (Nansemond-Suffolk Academy), placed fourth in the 800 freestyle relay at this year’s CAA championships; Mills, a senior co-captain and goalkeeper from Bear, DE (Caravel Academy), earned second team All-CAA honors as she posted five shutouts last fall; and Mueller, a freshman from Englishtown, NJ (Allentown HS), posted a 10-4 record in singles this season.

Olawoye, a junior forward and co-captain from Woonsocket, RI (St. Mark's Prep, MA HS), averaged 2.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 16 starts this past season; Perez, a freshman from Bucaramanga, Colombia, posted a singles record of 12-11 and a double mark of 15-9 this season; Potts, is a senior offensive guard from Newark, DE (Glasgow HS); Scherr, a junior goalkeeper and co-captain from Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s HS), has led the nationally-ranked Blue Hen men’s lacrosse team to a 12-5 record, the CAA title, and a berth in this week’s NCAA Tournament quarterfinals as he ranks among the national leaders in save percentage (.587) and goals allowed average (7.92); and Schmid, a senior co-captain from Lutherville, MD (Towson HS), won the Delaware Open 5,000 meter run title and competed at the IC4A Championships this spring.

Sloan, a sophomore attack from Thornton, PA (West Chester East HS), earned second team All-CAA honors this spring as she led the Blue Hens to an 11-6 record and scored 36 goals; Sloat, a senior pitcher and co-captain from Ballston Lake, NY (Shenendehowa HS), set numerous records during her career and posted a 2.19 earned run average and struck out 113 batters this season; and Wason, a senior from Wilmington, DE (Brandywine HS), competed in three meets for the UD women’s cross country team this fall.
