Blue Hens Win Novice Heavyweight Eight Race


PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team won the Novice Heavyweight Eight race and the Varsity Heavyweight Eight advanced to the finals in a competitive field to highlight Blue Hen performances at the Murphy Cup Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

In all, the Blue Hens finished sixth or higher in all five races in which they competed. Over 25 schools competed in the non-scoring meet.

Delaware's team of Dana Hammond, Jessica Colpo, Jenni Buckley, Lissa Kutz, Lauren Heller, Betsy Ferry, Vikki Humenik, Lisa Hardy, and Katey Prosser captured the Novice Heavyweight Eight race with a time of 6:36.46.

Delaware's "B" team of Anna Christopher, Amy Servidea, Ashley Connell, Maggie Bartholomew, Robin Kraft, Logan Thompson, McKenzie Jones, and Marybeth Engel placed fifth in the same event in a time of 7:00.25.

Delaware's Varsity Heavyweight Eight team fared well among heavy competition as the squad of Emily Bercaw, Amanda Duley, Gail Orem, Gayle Dornan, Karen Hommer, Courtney Levering, Bizzy Schultz, and Heather Bieler raced to a sixth place time of 6:43.60 in the finals. Villanova won the race in a time of 6:20.44 followed by Drexel (6:34.2), Rochester Institute of Technology (6:37.37), George Mason (6:41.95), and Bryn Mawr (6:42.86).

Also for the Hens, the Varsity Lightweight Eight team of Jenn O'Keefe, Danielle Stevens, Nicole Belsole, Denise Burke, Susan Krause, Laurie Patria, Tory Yanakos, Nicole Ferrari, and Whitney McCormick was second in a time of 6:48.4 behind winner Villanova (6:42.14).

Delaware's Novice Four team placed fourth overall behind Rochester (7:25.52), Penn State (7:30.76), and George Mason (7:33.50). The Blue Hens' team of Allison Haug, Krista Volikas, Bridget Fairchild, Karina McBride, and Lindsay Morris rowed to a time of 7:45.46.

The Blue Hens will compete at the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia next Saturday, April 29.
