Two University of Delaware Boats Advance to Sunday Action at Knecht Cup Regatta

CAMDEN, NJ -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team competed in six events at the Knecht Cup Regatta on the Cooper River Saturday, advancing two crews to action on Sunday.

The Novice Fours team placed second in its heat to advance to the semifinals and then sixth in the semifinals to advance to Sunday’s Third Level Final. The Blue Hen Novice Eights team also placed second in its heat to advance to the semifinals to be held on Sunday.

Also for Delaware, the Second Varsity Eights team placed fifth in its heat, the Varsity Fours team placed sixth, and the Varsity Eights team was sixth in its heat, and

The Delaware Novice Fours team of coxswain Jen Popkin, Rachel Waylett, Lindsay Byrne, Valerie Glace, and Tara Bree placed second in its heat with a time of 8:48.5, trailing only Lafayette (8:19.3). Sacred Heart was third (8:52.6) followed by St. Mary’s (9:03.5), LaSalle (9:11.9), and Stony Brook (9:26.4). In the semifinals, Delaware placed sixth in a time of 9:05.2. Lafayette won the semifinals race with a time of 8:28.3 followed by Brandeis (8:33.0), New York University (8:44.2), Colgate (8:48.2), and Lehigh (8:54.7).

The Delaware Novice Eights team of coxswain Marra Green, Tracy Iudica, Leanna Colubriale, Sara Leviton, Steph Lynch, Katelyn Huber, Corey Kalota, Kaitlin Roehrer, and Sarah Baillie was second in its heat with a clocking of 7:28.4, trailing only winner North Carolina (7:19.9). Placing third was Marist (7:35.1) followed by Temple (7:37.7), and Philadelphia University (7:45.1).

In the Second Varsity Eights race, Delaware’s crew of coxswain Avery Griffin, Katie Gooding, Clare Wardwell, Arielle Katz, Taima McCartney, Laura Stiffler, Maureen Reardon, Nicolette Lotrionte, and Brittany Hayes was fifth in 7:34.5. Massachusetts took first place in the heat with a time of 7:00.0 followed by Fordham (7:12.1), Connecticut (7:17.8), Colgate (7:24.1), Delaware, and Sacred Heart (8:27.6).

In the Varsity Eights competition, Delaware’s team of coxswain Callie Tegan, Mary Grace Maggiano, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Liz Cretekos, Elizabeth Carey, Lana Rivers, Meredith Rubin, and Lisa Medina placed sixth with a time of 7:19.1. Rhode Island won the heat in a time of 6:50 followed by Connecticut (6:53.8), North Carolina (6:56.4), Lehigh (7:05.7), and Robert Morris (7:15.3).

In the Varsity Fours race, Delaware’s team of coxswain Amanda Burton, Alexx Delorme, Lily Chavarriaga, Erin Venturato, and Grace Bennett rowed to a time of 8:59.4 to place fourth in its heat, trailing heat winner Boston College (8:10.7), Tulsa (8:26.7), Lehigh (8:27.3), Cincinnati (8:33.2), and Connecticut (8:37.4).
