University of Delaware Women’s Rowing Posts Five Second Place Finish at Lake Wheeler Regatta

RALEIGH, NC -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing squad posted five second place finishes and the Novice Eights boat won the petite final for a fourth place finish at the Lake Wheeler Regatta held Saturday on Lake Wheeler.

The Blue Hens competed in five different events and took part in two different races in four of those competitions. Delaware placed second in both Second Varsity Eights races, second in the Varsity Fours and Novice Fours races, and won the petite (consolation) finals for a fourth place finish in the Novice Eights race.

“It was a little windy but was a good day of racing,” said Delaware head coach Laura Slice. “I was pleased with the way our team competed and with the progress that they made from last week.”

In the Varsity Eights races, Duke won the first race in a time of 7:18.2 followed by Georgetown (7:31.4) and Delaware (7:44.8). In the second race, Georgetown won in a time of 7:29.5 followed by North Carolina (7:34.4) and Delaware (7:59.1). Delaware’s boat consisted of coxswain Callie Tegan, Mary Grace Maggiano, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Liz Cretekos, Elizabeth Carey, Lana Rivers, Meredith Rubin, and Lisa Medina.

In the Second Varsity Eights competition, Duke won the first race in a time of 7:38.3 followed by Delaware (8:16.9) and Northwestern (8:34.2). In the second race, North Carolina won in a time of 7:58.5 followed by Delaware (8:34.2). Delaware’s team included coxswain Avery Griffin, Katie Gooding, Taima McCartney, Laura Stiffler, Maureen Reardon, Arielle Katz, Clare Wardwell, Nicolette Lotrionte, and Brittany Hayes (at right).

In the Varsity Fours, Duke won the first race in 8:38.3 followed by North Carolina (8:59.9) and Delaware (10:06.7) and also captured the second race in 9:48.7 to defeat Delaware (10:18.4). The Delaware boat consisted of coxswain Amanda Burton, Alexx Delorme, Lily Chavarriaga, Erin Venturato, and Grace Bennett.

In the Novice Fours, the teams raced just once with Delaware placing second in 9:54.4 behind winner North Carolina (9:14.9). The Blue Hen squad consisted of coxswain Jen Popkin, Rachel Waylett, Lindsay Byrne, Valerie Glace, and Tara Bree.

In the Novice Eights competition, North Carolina won the qualifying race in 8:04 followed by Delaware (8:15.6) and Georgetown (8:22.8).

The Blue Hens’ second place finish qualified them for the petite finals, which they then won to place fourth overall in a time of 8:01.7, besting boats from Georgetown (8:09.6), and North Carolina (8:24.3). Delaware’s team consisted of coxswain Marra Green, Tracy Iudica, Leanna Colubriale, Kaitlin Roehrer, Steph Lynch, Katelyn Huber, Corey Kalota, Sara Leviton, and Sarah Baillie.

Delaware will continue action April 12-13 at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
