Delaware Women’s Rowing Team Caps Busy Day With Third Place Finish at Inaugural CAA Championships

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team took part in a busy day of racing Saturday on the Schuylkill River as the Blue Hens started the day by placing third in the inaugural Colonial Athletic Association and finished by placing second in two events at the Kerr Cup Regatta.

Delaware posted 20 points to finish third in the team standings at the first official CAA championships as the Hens placed third in the Second Varsity Eights race and fourth in both the Varsity Fours and Varsity Eights competitions.

Northeastern, which won the Second Varsity Eights and Varsity Eights races, won the team title with 35 points followed by Buffalo, Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, and Old Dominion. Buffalo captured the Varsity Fours face.

Delaware’s Second Varsity Eights team (at right) of Hillary Levitz, Sara Leviton, Liz Cretekos, Ashley Maguire, Brittany Hayes, Erin Hoban, Nicolette Lotrionte, Kaitlin Roehrer, and Leanna Colubriale rowed to a time of 7:09.35 to place third behind Northeastern (6:52.10) and Buffalo (7:00.63) and ahead of George Mason, Drexel, and Old Dominion.

In the Varsity Fours, Delaware’s team of Avery Griffin, Laura Wertman, Chelsea McFadden, Virginia Hall, and Tori Drach finished fourth in a time of 8:05.91. Buffalo won the race in 7:41.93 followed by Northeastern, George Mason, Delaware, and Drexel.

In the final race of the meet, Delaware’s Varsity Eights crew of Marra Green, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Rachael Conway, Mary Grace Maggiano, Elizabeth Carey, Katelyn Huber, and Steph Lynch was fourth with a time of 6:54.77. Northeastern won in a time of 6:43.18 followed by Buffalo, Drexel, Delaware, Old Dominion, and George Mason.

Delaware competed in five events at the Kerr Cup, finishing second in both the Varsity Eights and Novice Eights, third in the Novice Fours, fourth in the Varsity Fours and Second Varsity Eights.

The Delaware Varsity Eights team of Marra Green, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Rachael Conway, Mary Grace Maggiano, Elizabeth Carey, Katelyn Huber, and Steph Lynch placed second in its heat and then second in the finals. Buffalo won the finals followed by Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Philadelphia University, and Villanova.

The Blue Hen Novice Eights crew of Christa Kurman, Christine McGrath, Lauren Kolsky, Courtney Williams, Mary Elizabeth Scholz, Julie Ridgeway, Erica Morgan, Lauren Kanaskie, and Jamie Hedrick won its heat and then finished second in the finals. Buffalo won the finals event followed by Delaware, Villanova, George Mason, Drexel, and Virginia Commonwealth.

In the Novice Fours competition, Delaware’s A team of Rachel Waylett, Laura Wertman, Chelsea McFadden, Virginia Hall, and Tori Drach won its heat while the Delaware B crew of Hillary Levitz, Arielle Farrell, Jenny Kim, Elyse Palmer, and Laura Dodd finished fourth in its heat. The Delaware A team then placed third in the finals behind Buffalo and Villanova and ahead of Philadelphia University and New York Maritime.

In the Varsity Fours competition, Delaware’s A team of Avery Griffin, Grace Capreol, Kristin Endres, Valerie Glace, and Sarah Baillie won its heat while the Delaware B team of Amanda Burton, Taima McCartney, Katie Gooding, Catherine Hansen, and Lisa Medina placed fifth in its heat. The Delaware A team advanced to the finals and placed fourth behind Old Dominion, Robert Morris, and Villanova.

In the Second Varsity Eights race, Delaware’s team of Hillary Levitz, Sara Leviton, Liz Cretekos, Ashley Maguire, Brittany Hayes, Erin Hoban, Nicolette Lotrionte , Kaitlin Roehrer, and Leanna Colubriale finished fourth in a time of 7:35.62. Buffalo won the race in a time of 7:14.6 followed by George Mason and Drexel.
