NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing head coach Laura Slice has announced that senior Elizabeth Carey (at right) and junior Nicolette Lotrionte have been named captains for the 2008-09 season.

A native of Vienna, Va., Carey enters her fourth year as a member of Delaware’s Varsity Eights. Last year, she helped them to four third place finishes, including one in the Kerr Cup, the unofficial Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

In Carey’s career, her Varsity Eight teams have won once at the CAA Championships (2006), placed third at CAA’s twice, and had two sixth place and one fifth place finishes at ECAC’s.

Lotrionte, from the Bronx, N.Y. has been a key member of the Second Varsity Eights the last two years. She has helped them place second and third, respectively, in the last two CAA Championships. As a freshman in 2006, she was a member of the Novice Eights that finished third at the CAA Championships and second in the ECAC Metro Championships Petite Final.

The rowing team has already competed in an exhibition match against Saint Joseph’s and Temple, and it has three more exhibition runs in the fall on Oct. 11 (Navy Day at Philadelphia), Oct. 18 (Alumni Weekend) and Nov. 1 (Head of the Occoquan at Fairfax, Va.). The spring schedule begins on Mar. 14 at Saint Joseph’s.
