PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team sent three crews to the semifinals and competed in two other races Friday at the opening day of the annual Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
The annual event, which is the nation’s largest collegiate rowing regatta and Delaware’s final competition of the season, will resume Saturday morning with semifinals and finals competitions.
Delaware advanced three crews on Friday as the Novice Fours team placed fourth in its heat, the Novice Eights finished 13th in its heat, and the Varsity Eights placed 14th in its heat.
In addition, the Blue Hen Varsity Fours team placed 21st, missing a semifinal berth by three spots, and the Second Varsity Eights crew finished eighth, missing a trip to the finals by just two places.
The Novice Fours team of Rachel Waylett, Laura Wertman, Chelsea McFadden, Virginia Hall, and Tori Drach posted a time of 5:29.04 to finish fourth overall and advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Loyola posted the top time with a clocking of 5:19.53.
The Varsity Eights crew of Marra Green, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Rachael Conway, Mary Grace Maggiano, Elizabeth Carey, Katelyn Huber, and Steph Lynch rowed to a time of 4:47.66 to finish 14th and earn a semifinal spot. Grand Valley State posted the best time with a clocking of 4:30.49.
The Novice Eights group of Christa Kurman, Kristine McGrath, Lauren Kolsky, Courtney Williams, Mary Elizabeth Scholz, Erica Morgan, Julie Ridgeway, Lauren Kanaskie, and Jamie Hedrick placed 13th in a time of 5:12.04 to advance to the semifinals. Connecticut had the top time with a posting of 5:04.22.
The Varsity Fours team of Avery Griffin, Grace Capreol, Kristin Endres, Valerie Glace, and Sarah Baillie rowed to a time of 5:14.94 to place 21st overall. Cal-Irvine took the top seed with a time of 5:00.88.
The Second Varsity Eights crew of Hillary Levitz, Sara Leviton, Liz Cretekos, Ashley Maguire, Brittany Hayes, Erin Hoban, Nicolette Lotrionte, Kaitlin Roehrer, and Leanna Colubriale posted an eighth place finish in a time of 5:18.80 but missed a finals berth by just under three seconds. Massachusetts had the best time in 5:10.43.
The Blue Hens will continue action Saturday with the Varsity Eights competing in the semifinals at 7:21 a.m., the Novice Fours racing in the semifinals at 8:07 a.m., and the Novice Eights competing in the semifinals at 10 a.m. The top two crews in each semifinals will advance to the finals later in the day.
