University of Delaware Novice Fours Teams Leads Hen Rowers with Fourth Place Finish at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware Novice Fours crew of Rachel Waylett, Laura Wertman, Chelsea McFadden, Virginia Hall, and Tori Drach rowed to a time of 8:50.88 to take fourth place overall and highlight Blue Hen performances at the final day of the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

In addition to the Novice Fours squad, the Delaware Varsity Eights team placed fifth in its semifinal heat and the Novice Eights team placed sixth in its semifinal heat but neither team advance to the finals. The fourth place finish was the highest for the Blue Hen crew since the Second Varsity Eights squad placed second in 2003.

The annual event, which is the nation’s largest collegiate rowing regatta, was Delaware’s final competition of the season.

The Novice Fours team advanced to Saturday’s finals after placing fourth in their heat on Friday. On Saturday, the team rowed to a time of 8:50.88 to finish fourth behind winner Loyola (8:34.60), Duquesne (8:39.52), and Tulsa (8:45.88). Robert Morris was fifth (9:01.99) followed by Purdue (9:03.24) and Pittsburgh (9:30.13).

The UD Varsity Eights team posted a fifth place finish in the semifinals as the team of Marra Green, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Rachael Conway, Mary Grace Maggiano, Elizabeth Carey, Katelyn Huber, and Steph Lynch rowed to a time of 6:44.68. Buffalo won the race with a time of 6:29.94 followed by Purdue, Temple, Fordham, Delaware, and George Mason.

The Blue Hens Novice Eights squad of Christa Kurman, Kristine McGrath, Lauren Kolsky, Courtney Williams, Mary Elizabeth Scholz, Erica Morgan, Julie Ridgeway, Lauren Kanaskie, and Jamie Hedrick finished sixth in its semifinal heat with a clocking of 7:09.39. Connecticut won the race in a time of 6:54.86 followed by Temple, Massachusetts, Villanova, and Drake.
