CAMDEN, N.J. -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team closed out an outstanding showing at the Knecht Cup Saturday as the Blue Hens competed in two grand finals, two petite finals, and posted a second place finish in the Second Novice Eights race and a fourth place showing in the Second Varsity Fours competitions on the Cooper River.
Delaware advanced two crews to the Knecht Cup grand finals for the first time since 2001 and finished sixth in each race. In addition, the Novice Eights team was fourth in the petite finals, the Varsity Fours crew was fifth in the petite finals, the Second Novice Eights boat was second in its race, and the Second Varsity Eights group finished fourth in its competition.
The Novice Fours team of Rachel Waylett, Laura Wertman, Chelsea McFadden, Virginia Hall, and Tori Drach finished in sixth place in the grand finals with a time of 9:53.5. Loyola won the race in 9:05.0 followed by Tulsa, West Virginia, Villanova, Connecticut, and Delaware.
The Varsity Eights team of Marra Green, Meredith Rubin, Darra Finnerty, Regine Adrien, Rachael Conway, Mary Grace Maggiano, Elizabeth Carey, Katelyn Huber, and Steph Lynch also finished sixth with a time of 7:36.8. Buffalo won the race in 7:02.5 followed by Rhode Island, Drexel, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Delaware.
The Novice Eights team of Christa Kurman, Kristine McGrath, Mary Scholz, Erica Morgan, Lauren Kolsky, Courtney Williams, Julie Ridgeway, Lauren Kanaskie, and Jamie Hedrick posted a fifth place finish in the petite (consolation) finals with a clocking of 8:38.1. Wisconsin won the race in a time of 8:17.0 followed by Temple, George Mason, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Villanova.
In the Varsity Fours petite finals, Delaware’s crew of Avery Griffin, Grace Capreol, Kristin Endres, Valerie Glace, and Sarah Baillie finished in fifth place with a time of 9:21. Robert Morris won the race in 8:54.1 followed by Villanova, Rhode Island, Philadelphia University, Delaware, and New York University.
The Delaware Second Novice Eights team finished second in its final race with a time of 9:07.8. The Blue Hens team of Rachel Waylett, Laura Wertman, Chelsea McFadden, Virginia Hall, Tori Drach, Arielle Farrell, Jenny Kim, Elyse Palmer, and Laura Dodd finished behind Massachusetts (8:58.1).
In the Second Varsity Fours race, Delaware finished in fourth place with a time of 1:05.27 behind winner West Virginia (1:04.30) followed by Boston College and Villanova. Delaware’s crew consisted of Amanda Burton, Taima McCartney, Katie Gooding, Catherine Hansen, and Clare Wardwell.
The Blue Hens will return to action April 18 when they compete at the first official Colonial Athletic Association Championships as well as the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
